comiXology giving away The Walking Dead Vol. 1 free at ECCC 2012

Going to Emerald City Comicon? Yes we’ve asked this before, this time it serves as an even bigger boost, if you’re headed out to the show stop by comiXology at booth #308 for a free copy of The Walking Dead Vol. 1 to make your very own. If you have your phone on you it can be redeemed on the spot and you can start reading when you take a break from cruising the floor. They did this at Wondercon and while it was first come first serve they had plenty of cards to hand out to curious attendees, keep in mind they are noting only 2,500 copies will be available at the con so grab them while you can for a giant dose of zombie goodness.

comiXology will also be hosting an open panel on all things digital, if you want to catch that check out Room 3 on Saturday March 31st from 2:00pm – 3:00pm and get your latest pondering cleared up or just sit and listen to the flow of Q&A from the community.

3000AD and DC Entertainment working on Line of Defense Comic Book

Comics and video games are always crossing up in one way or another, today 3000AD and DC are bringing a comic called Line of Defense based on the 3000AD lore. Taking readers into space where Galactic Command is at odds with opposing forces taking over resources on a distant planet and super weapon is in the works to make it even worse.

The comic will launch with a special public first issue at San Diego Comic-Con this year at the DC Comics booth and it will serve as a launch platform for the upcoming video game as well. Private viewings will be available at popular conventions for industry like E3 as well, hopefully I can sneak a look at it there when we hit the show in June.

Some back story on the comic from 3000AD:

For many years the Terran military forces of GALCOM have been engaged in various conflicts with the Insurgents – a splinter group of military personnel opposed to the Terran governing body. In a surprise move, the Insurgents setup shop on the long abandoned planet of Lyrius, previously used by GALCOM for weapons testing, R&D and other forms of military operations. This move wouldn’t normally warrant a deep space troop deployment, except for the fact that the Insurgents were rumored to be developing a super weapon on the planet. The “Firefight” comic tells the story of the brave direct action team sent by GALCOM to neutralize the threat and destroy the weapon.

As a prequel we can only hope it serves as a full-bodied story and not just something designed to leave a lot of cliffhanger moments, comics are a great medium to build attention off when used properly. We’ll have to see how it turns out when preview pages start making their way out.

The Avengers play closer slot for Tribeca Film Fest 2012

Marvel is going all out with The Avengers, today the team announces they’ve secured the closing spot to the festival and will air a special screening there for the event on April 28th, the promotion will allow local heroes from police, rescue and armed forces to sit in on the screening and meet the cast. It’s a nice gesture by the group at an event often out of reach, it’s a huge treat though as they’ll get to catch the actors behind the magic on the screen as well.

Joss Whedon of course was excited at the news and had this to say

“Showing at Tribeca is both an honor and a double homecoming for me, who grew up in Manhattan, and for the movie, which wrapped production there.  I’m thoroughly psyched to be closing the festival with our intimate little think-piece.”

For the rest of us the film will still be on schedule to release May 4, 2012 but hey if you’re going to Tribeca and know someone at Marvel, maybe you can sneak in.

Avengers vs X-Men #0 sells out, second printing on the way

Marvel certainly has their hands full with AvX, the company announced that they’ve run out of copies of #0 to Diamond but there will likely be retail chains still holding onto a small pool of them still. As a result Marvel is going back into printing and putting out a new variant second edition to help cater to fans eager to catch how this new saga is going to kick off. Given the issue helps elaborate on The Scarlet Witch and Hope Summers leading into this it’s no surprise that everyone is grabbing it.

Frank Cho is heading up the cover for the second print variant, hopefully this one lasts a little longer than a day otherwise Marvel will really be in trouble with the fans. Honestly while I like the current issue 0 cover I really want that variant because it looks awesome. This is going to be a hard series to follow if the art keeps to this level of temptation in each issue. Check out the full size image to the right for a better look.
