The Fifth Beatle is to be published in 3 Editions!

The Fifth Beatle © 2012 Tiwary Entertainment Group Ltd.

Ever since its announcement last fall, there has been buzz about THE FIFTH BEATLE. Written by multiple Tony Award–winning producer Vivek J. Tiwary (Green Day’s American IdiotThe Addams FamilyMel Brooks’s The Producers), The Fifth Beatle, chronicling the life of the Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, will officially be released on November 19.

The Fifth Beatle, from M Press Books, a division of Dark Horse Comics, recounts the untold true story of Brian Epstein, the visionary manager who discovered and guided the Beatles to unprecedented international stardom—yet died painfully lonely at the young age of thirty-two. More than merely the story of “The Man Who Made the Beatles,” The Fifth Beatle is an uplifting, tragic, and ultimately inspirational human story about the desire to leave behind a legacy, amidst the struggle to overcome crushing personal obstacles and insurmountable odds.

This marks the first full-length graphic novel painted by fanboy favorite Andrew C. Robinson (Dusty StarKing ConanStarmanSuperman). The book also features a special section paying homage to the 1960s Beatles cartoons, lovingly drawn by multiple Eisner and Harvey Award–winning cartoonist Kyle Baker (Why I Hate SaturnPlastic ManNat Turner).

“Telling the Brian Epstein story is a true labor of love. The Fifth Beatle really is my life’s work—as I’ve been researching Brian’s life for more than half my own,” says Tiwary. “So it’s with great excitement and anticipation that I can finally share this little-known story about one of the great architects of modern pop culture with the rest of the world.”

Vivek J. Tiwary is also set to write and produce a feature-film adaptation of his graphic novel. Tiwary has signed a deal with Sony/ATV (who control the Lennon/McCartney music catalog) which gives him unprecedented access to Beatles songs for the film.

The standard hardcover edition will be available for $19.99 in an oversized library format. A collector’s-edition hardcover of this groundbreaking graphic novel will also be available, featuring a wraparound, textured cover and a section of bonus materials including Beatles and Brian Epstein memorabilia, artist sketches, and alternate covers, for $49.99.

The limited edition (1,500 copies) features a tip-in sheet signed by creators Vivek J. Tiwary, Andrew C. Robinson, and Kyle Baker, along with a twenty-four-page bonus section including rare Beatles and Brian Epstein memorabilia and behind-the-scenes sketches, a unique, textured cover, and a special slipcase, for $99.99.

Tiwary will be signing limited prints of The Fifth Beatle at BookExpo America in New York City this Saturday, June 8th at the Dark Horse booth #1003 at 11 a.m.

Additionally both Tiwary and artist Andrew Robinson will be delivering a panel presentation at HeroesCon in Charlotte, NC on June 9th titled: Comics of the Fab Four: The Fifth Beatle and Beyond. The panel begins promptly at 11:30 a.m.

Review – King Conan – The Hour Of The Dragon Part 1 of 6

22191
Gerald Parel Cover

Writer: Timothy Truman
Artist: Tomas Giorello
Colorist: Jose Villarrubia
Cover Artist: Gerald Parel
Published by: Dark Horse Comics

The trio of Timothy Truman,Tomas Giorello and Jose Villarrubia team up once again to bring us another one of Robert E. Howards classic’s. King Conan – The Hour of The Dragon #1 is amazingly written issue packed with lots of disposition throughout this issue, like in the past King Conan arcs it’s told in narrative form with Conan as the narrator.

This issue starts with the wizard Orastes and his Amalric’s Tarascus the brother of King Nemeda and Valerius the former king of Aquilonian reviving the ancient wizard Xaltotun. With the wizard awaken the three desperately ask for his assistances which he surprisingly accepts and they begin to devise a plan to get rid Conan. Meanwhile it is the night before battle and we see Conan asleep but is awaken by a bad dream. Two of his men who heard him screaming rush in, Conan tells them that he feels a evil presences awaiting in the shadows ready to take him. At that moment his scouts trumps sound off which states the start of the war, As he starts to put his armor the evil aura he sensed earlier comes back and it turns out to be Xaltotun who then casts a spell on Conan that paralyzes him.

Without trying to give away the hole plot I’ll just say things get real thick at the end of this issue for the Cimmerian known as Conan. Writer timothy Truman ends the issue on a cliff hanger with Conan facing impossible odds.

Artist Tomas Giorello brings his heavily shaded and detail style to this arc, like most of his work Giorello’s panels are well illustrated and consisted all throughout the issue making it easy for readers to follow.

The hour of the Dragon #1 is a great first issue and going by the trios past work together this arc is going to be just as good as King Conan – The Phoenix On The Sword.

Colors: Michael Dialynas
Cover Art: Guy Davis
Published by: Dark Horse Comic

Under attack by two robot like assassins Amala struggles to defend herself as the assassins seem to have the upper hand, but with some slick moves she over comes the disadvantage and destroys the would be assassins. With the two robots gone she continues on her mission but falls unconsous ill because of an eye injury she had suffered during her fight with the assassins.  As Amala lays unconscious on the ground, in dreamlike state she is greed by all the ghost she’s spoken and seen throughout her life time, the ghost tell that they can help take the poison form her body along with help her even when she’s not aware of it.

At that moment Amala is shock to not only see that she’s okay but she has taken out mass group of bandits, after reaching her destination she pulls out a disguise to make it in the City, Meanwhile on Smittys farm the police come with heavy firepower looking for Amala who they assume is still there.

Now Inside the city Amala who’s dressed like an old lady checks into an hotel room and pays the front desk men extra gold to make sure she doesn’t be disturbed during her stay. In Avatouon the Modifier Capital city a unknown man is talking to what seems like his Queen, about the peace between the Modifiers and the Purifiers is starting get shakey and that there bond is the only thing keeping the country together. The issue ends with Amala who’s  jumping form roof top to roof  until she reaches a tower that looks like the place her final target is residing in.

Amala’s Blade #2 is another fast paced issue, not much going on as far as story is concern but it does introduces some new characters who look like they’re going to play a big roll in the next issue but besides that not much is going on in this issue there was no character or story development what so ever in this issue hopefully the writer Steve Horton opens it up alittle bit more in t next Amala’s Blade #3.

Artist Michael Dialynas cntinues to be consistent in both  #1 and #2 so far and that’s good sign simple cause if a issue like this one is missing something its good to have great illustrations to keep the eyes entertain.

Review – House Of Gold & Bones #2

22894
Jason Shawn Alexander Cover

Writer: Corey Taylor
Artist: Richard Clark
Colorist: Dan Jackson
Cover Artist: Jason Shawn Alexander
Published by: Dark Horse Comics

House of Gold & Bones #2 picks up where the first one left off, the main character Human is still disoriented and paranoid running form a Black John and his bunch of zombielike asks if he’s RU48; writer Corey Taylor does a good job keeping you interested on what could happened in this issue, on the run still human runs into a Adam and a new character Peckinpah,.

Meanwhile Adam who’s dressed in a SS uniform catches up to him and threatens him for not having his ish together as he says. Just when it looks like Adams about to finish him off he teleports away with as Peckinpah appears and guides him deep into the woods who gives him a unkown object and instructions to shallow it when the zomelike people catch up. Just when his about to take it Black john catches up to him and throws him against a tree causing him to drop the the object and knocking him out in the process which ends the issue.

In the end House of Gold & Bones #2 is your basic second issue, in that it introduces a new character and at the same time advances the story just enough to keep you interested. The writing is decent although there are some moments where you’ll get lost due to lack of explanation or detail or certain things.with that said House of gold & bones is a intriguing comic one that i’ll keep a eye on.

Review – Akaneiro #1

22674
Shu Yan Cover

Writer: Justin Aclin
Artist: Vasilis Lolos
Colorist: Michael Atiyeh
Cover Artist: Shu yan
Published by: Dark Horse Comics

From the brilliant imagination of video game auteur American McGee comes a dazzling reenvisioning of Red Riding Hood set in the wondrous world of Japanese folklore! Justin Aclin and Vasilis Lolos take Kani a young woman torn between two cultures on an epic adventure battling devious Yokai for the fate of her world!

Akanerio was first introduce to us through a action role-playing game that was developed by American McGee’s Spicy Horse company, the game was base heavily on the Little Red Riding Hood tale but in feudal Japan also add a mixture of manga and Japanese folklore.

Issue #1 is basically a origins issue, the main character Kani whose tribe the Ainiu’s live on the island of Yomi, they are a religious tribe that believe in spiritual guidance or direction so it seems, writer Aclin doesn’t really get into detail about them,Then there’s another tribe called the Akane’s they are a warrior tribe that defend the island form “Yokai” demons that also in habit Yomi island. The Akane’s have a elite group of specially trained warriors called the Red Hunters, who are the ones that defend the island.

The two tribes have a history and are both trying to gain the upper hand on one another, The main character Kani whose mother was killed by a Yokai believes the Red Hunters are necessary and that the ways of her people are slow. During a spiritual ceremony a Yokai eludes one the Red hunters and attacks the Ainiu village, Kani who witness the death of her mother begins to attack the demon along with the Red hunter it escaped form. After the demon is killed the elder of the Ainiu’s blames the attack on the Akane’s and the Red Hunters, he declares war against them. But before things can get out of hand Kani suggest that maybe war could be eluded if she was to join the Red Hunters, the other elders agree that just maybe things could be better between the two if she would join the clan, but only if she can pass the test all Akane’s must take before becoming a red hunter.

During her journey to the village of Akane Kani endures the harsh snowy mountains a group demon infected hares that attack her now injury and tired she comes as cross a man standing by two rhodes. After getting directions form the man she continues her journey little did she know is that the man was actually a Yokai disguise as a man and he just sent her in the wrong direction.

Final Thoughts: Akanerio #1 has very solid writing theirs a good amount of exposition throughout the issue, Justin Aclin blends both American and Japanese folklore together quite well the flow and pacing reminds me of a manga one that comes to mind is Inuyasha, if not for the artwork it could maybe pass off as a manga. Now when I say “if not for the artwork” I’m not saying its bad. Artist Vasilis Lolos does a beautiful job on the monster designs each have there own distinct features which is  must when creating beasts who are mutated by demons. While the character designs are good the lack of backgrounds in some panels is unacceptable, Shu yan cover art is amazing if may say.All in all Akaneiro #1 is a good issue and worth following I’m for sure going to keep an eye out for it.

Review – Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher #1

Story: Richard Corben22815
Art: Richard Corben
Colors: Richard Corben
Cover Art: Richard Corben
Published by: Dark Horse Comic

A sickness resides in the house of Usher. Its history is cursed, its tenants plagued by abominable love, and it’s hallways lined with coffins and the rotted dead.

The Fall of the House of Usher #1 is Richard Corben retailing of the classic Edgar Allan Poe story, Just like the original it tells of Allen ( Narrator in the Original) experiences in the house of usher when he vists an old friend Roderick Usher. Corben stays true to the original by making it dark and creepy, like poe’s adaptation it’s about a man visiting an old friend only to find out that he’s become mentally unstable for example there’s a scene where Roderick has his sister posing nude and maliciously scold’s her the entire time, it’s a tale of obsession and how it effects your mind. While there are some similarities to poe’s version there’s also differences, one them being the fact that Corben combine another one poe’s short story The Oval Portrait which also deals with obsession

For the character design, Corben uses a caricature art style making the characters look almost clay like. His Roderick Usher who has a oversize nose that takes up half his face and big ears to go along with it. Sometimes the artwork is a little inconsistent in some panels Roderick almost looks like Hugo Strange of Batman; the color scheme throughout the comic is dark and smooth with a earth-Tone feel to it.

Final Thoughts: Because I’m unfamiliar with Richard Corben’s recent and past work, I can’t really say if this is his best or worst comic he has done, But I can say that it is a nice adaptation one that Poe fans should give a read.
