Fresh off of the battle with the Court of the Owls and what might be his own lost brother, we see the Batman story take a detour back to the people and the city he protects.

Harper and Cullen have a hard time getting by in the Narrows, a lesser traffic area of Gotham that happens to be part of the new Wayne makeover for the city. With rent, bullying from homophobic locals and home invasions there’s a lot of stress on the plate that seems to never go away, Harper takes the stage as the focus point for the story though. As the child who had to grow up when times got tough, she’s never let herself take a break after moving as sole watcher of her brother. Given the bad area, working under the city, having no family and dealing with constant bullies one can see how she might cross paths with Batman.

It’s a fun side story, we see the life of someone in Gotham who for so long fought on their own to get and keep what they had and when it all reached the boiling point, when the stress of life got too high there was a glimmer of hope. Well… a vast darkness of hope to be more accurate, Batman is an equal opportunity man and he dishes it out to the top villains of the city and to the local bullies as well so no one gets the impression they’re off the hook. It’s a warming tale when things looked so absolutely grim for 11 issues as the series kicked off, some might be put off by this shift but it felt like it gave a bit more personality to the city he runs around in.

The art from Becky Cloonan through the book is a pleasant presentation, you feel the expressions of the characters in each squint, smirk, frown and motion. The style itself feels lighter in the presentation and it shines through for 21 pages, after that Andy Clarke takes the helm and I really don’t know what happened there. If they didn’t compare notes, or drawings is entirely in the air as it only takes that first page to throw confusion into the mix. Harper transforms from a young girl with a punk style to looking like one of Joker’s goons as she leaps out-of-the-way. The sharp contrast isn’t a good thing and normally if you need to exchange teams you do it without so much contrast. Snyder and  Tynion for example don’t face nearly as much of a dispute in handling the characters as they continue to flow. Hopefully this isn’t a habit for DC, I would have preferred to see Cloonan finish out her issue as it grabbed my attention until that disruption.

Batman #12 isn’t a continuation of the Owls story at all (although we do see some bits sprinkled in at the end) but it’s still worth looking into if you’re a fan of seeing Batman stick it to those who deserve it and protect the people just trying to get by in a world of Jokers, Two-Faces, Penguins and so on. Sometime’s it’s not about the super high-profile events in a comic, this was one of those times and I’m glad they gave the approval to run with this story.

Story:★★★★½
Art:★★½☆☆

*Note: The lower score on the art reflects the issue of contrast between Cloonan and Clarke, had they went with just Cloonan I wouldn’t have had an issue here, plus the last panel ruins Harper with the expression and facial structure Clarke applied.

Buffy is settling in quickly to her new role as bodyguard. Along with Kennedy, she is on duty protecting Theo Daniels, founder of TinCan. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill protect the rich and important computer nerd, Daniels has Wolfram and Hart after him and Buffy has her hands full. TinCan is a social networking site that Wolfram and Hart hired Daniels to create, and even with magic not existing on Earth anymore, the complicated code that he created allows other-worldly portals to remain open. The solution to the problem quickly becomes evident however, as always in Buffy’s world, it won’t be easy. Buffy calls on an ally for help, who as it turns out may not be as trustworthy and forthcoming as Buffy would have hoped!

This issue has a lot of action. The Wolfram and Hart storyline is exciting and it will be interesting to see what their next move will be. This issue has the feel of a stand alone issue even though it’s part of an arc. I’m not saying this is a bad thing but how it all comes together will also be interesting to see. Like I said in my review of the last issue, I’ve never been a big fan of Kennedy but her role in this issue is minimal and my annoyance level with her was low. Buffy seems to have calmed down a little bit in this issue, which in my opinion is a good thing. She previously felt frantic and lost and she seems more on track here. The betrayal at the end of the issue was a shock and I can’t wait for Buffy to lose her s#!t in the next issue!

Review – Angel & Faith #12 Family Reunion Part 2

Script: Christos Gage
Art: Rebekah Isaacs
Colors: Dan Jackson
Letters: Richard Starkings & Comicrafts Jimmy Betancourt
Cover: Steve Morris
Alternate Cover: Rebekah Isaacs with Dan Jackson
Executive Producer: Joss Whedon
Published By: Dark Horse

This issue begins with us seeing first hand that Connor’s home planet, Quor’toth, is still not high on the list for premium vacation spots. Connor’s legacy in Quor’toth, as everyone quickly finds out very much precedes him and the mere sight of him seems to arouse a healthy amount of fear in the natives. There seems to be different factions, those that fear him, those that worship him and those that want to kill him. The upside though is that Willow has found her magic mojo (at least partially) and is working frantically to find a less scary and less deadly kind of world to work on her magic. Just as she finally succeeds and as they are about to go, Connor learns some startling news which adds a whole new layer to their mission! Meanwhile, back in the Earthly realm, Lavinia and Sophie return home (from a Morrissey concert?!?) to find some unwanted guests who have their own plans. Once everyone returns home from Quor’toth chances are they will want to go back rather than deal with the mess that’s about to happen back at Giles’ house.

This issue was very Connorcentric and even though he’s never been one if my favorite characters I really enjoyed his story. It actually made him interesting and showed how he’s has grown up and stopped being the angry, belligerent teen he was. Seeing some of the resolve in Angel and Connor’s relationship was a nice touch too. It seems like everyone involved in this comic has really found their footing and each issue continues to be better than the last. Everything is solid, the characters voices feel and sound true, Rebekah Isaacs does a phenomenal job and Christos Gage’s writing just keeps getting better. This really was a great read and I can’t wait for the next issue!

Review – Uncanny X-Men #12

Writer: Kieron Gillen
Pencils: Greg Land
Cover:  Greg Land
Published by: Marvel Comics

Greg Land Cover

Cyclops are seen regrouping in the X-Diasoira classified location, where he divides the team into small group of two, he then orders them to search in different location for Hope, the first group consist of Magneto,Psylocke, Boom Boom are order to Wundagore the second group Namor, Sunspot, Hezibah to Tabula Rasa.

Meanwhile on Tabula Rasa, Montana a creature that looks like one the night people is given medical attention to one of his own, but is distrated when hears a impact so he quickly takes off the impact site. At the crash site a team of three Avengers Luke Cage, Thing and She-Hulk  are exploring the surrounding area trying to locate the signal of Hope that directs them to a Cave. As they walk inside the cave the creature arrives and comments on how the three of them are similar to X-Men. Somewhere on Tabula Rasa Sunspot and Hezibah are waiting for Namor who returns form under water with help. Back in the Cave the Avengers are fighting a giant worm like creature and its little worm like minions, with ease they quickly dispose of the worms in and outside the Cave but are met by the X-Men and the battle begins with the creature form before looking on.

Uncanny X-Men #12 is a really solid issue with good fight sequence especially the fight between Namor and Thing. Kieron Gillen and Greg Land do a excellent job in my opinion making two minor unattractive characters look like bad-asses. Gillen also slips in alittle humor noticeably when Hezibah humorously asks the water creature queen if Namor is any good in bed, with that said Uncanny X-Men#12 is a definite pick up for those following the AvX series.

Review – Transplants Roxy Theater Show 2/10 – Los Angeles, CA

“Take a look around baby, yeah my whole crews ugly!”…well not really but the Transplants did put on a sick and awesome show at The Roxy in Hollywood last night February 10th 2012! Matt Freeman of Operation Ivy and Rancid fame, all around bass playing God, and front-man of Devil’s Brigade opened the show playing a 35 to 40 minute set. It would be an understatement to say they sounded fantastic. Matt was ridiculous on bass, opting for what looked like his signature Squire rather than his upright used on the album. DJ Bonebrake of L.A.’s legendary punk band X backed Matt on drums and whose timing, energy and gum chewing helped keep the crowd screaming for more. Throughout the set, Matt genuinely thanked the audience, his best friend of 39 years Tim Armstrong (Operation Ivy, Rancid, Tim Armstrong’s Rock ‘N Roll theater, numerous collaborative and solo side projects, and all around musical genius) and the Transplants for having his band open the show.

After Devil’s Brigade, the Transplants started their set to a very pumped up, filled to capacity crowd. This was their first show in 7 years, and the testosterone flying out of them could not be mistaken. Their opening song was “Tall Cans In The Air” (my personal favorite) where Skinhead Rob Aston proceeded to shake a beer and spray the crowd with it. Nobody seemed to mind. By the crowds reaction everyone was thirsty for blood boiling, vein shaking musical madness. The Transplants delivered nothing less and played all the songs you would expect, “Diamond and Guns”, “Gangsters and Thugs”, “DJ, DJ” with a few surprises like “Saturday Night” off Travis Barker’s solo album, Give the Drummer Some as well as a couple of covers by iconic punk bands (if you want to know, catch a show and if you’re lucky you might hear some too)!

From Rob and Travis’ tweets to their intensity throughout the show, it was clear that these guys were extremely stoked to be playing together again. There is nothing better than seeing a band whose energy transfers to the audience and that is exactly what was going on here. As the crowd slammed, pogoed and screamed along to every song, an amped up Rob embodied the same energy, spitting and throwing beer on the crowd (it may sound gross but in the moment really added to the show). Travis Barker (Blink-182) on drums was amazing. The guy is a sweaty drumming machine. How someone could keep up such a level of constant intensity is mind-blowing. So many times drummers are stationary and kind of stuck in the back. The fact that Travis was able to have the same presence as Rob and Tim who were jumping around at the front of the stage is a testament to his extraordinary abilities. Finally, in his signature style, Tim Armstrong ripped the guitar while somehow simultaneously spinning and dancing across the stage without missing a beat. Despite having gone to Rancid shows for years, I am continually blown away and amazed at his ability to connect with the crowd. When Tim sat on the edge of the stage playing his guitar and singing with the crowd, he generated a vibe reminiscent of old punk shows where the band and the fans fuel one another.

I can easily say that this was one of the best performances I have ever seen. Throughout the entire show there were multiple times during the night that Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman were walking around talking to people, taking pictures and honestly, just being rad. I was able to meet both of them and they could not have been cooler. It was a fantastic night, a fantastic show and if you have the chance to catch them, (they are playing Las Vegas Monday, February 13th) go, I promise you won’t be disappointed, unless of course you don’t like good things.

The Transplants are currently working on their 3rd album, which will hopefully be released later this year with a tour to follow!
