I remember picking up my first issue of Spawn when it came out, at a comic and card shop where the image section was sandwiched at the end of the DC and Marvel area right next to the signed sports pictures. It was a good day and yet it was also almost 20 years ago since the debut, this June McFarlane steps back into the lead role to drop cover art on Spawn #220 to celebrate the anniversary and act as cover author for the rest of 2012.
Variant covers will also be available for the issue, currently known are these versions.
- Original Spawn 220 (Todd McFarlane cover) Cover A
- Savage Spawn Variant (Eric Larsen tribute cover) Cover B
- Youngblood Variant (Rob Liefeld tribute cover) Cover C
- Collectors Special (Szymon Kudranski cover) – Dedication based on Spawn #1 (limited to 2500 copies)
If you’re really up for getting all these variants and the black and white versions of A, B and C then you should give some attention over to the April issue of Previews so you’ll be covered come June 6th.
McFarlane also had some words to say on this special event for Spawn
“Early in my career one of the things I looked forward to after I finished the interiors on a book, was to sit back and try and come up with a single image that would catch the fan’s attention,” said McFarlane. “I had a pretty decent run with some of the Hulk, Spider-Man, and Spawn covers, and I’m going to come back and see if I can draw a few covers that will intrigue everybody.”
