Review – Malefic #3

Malefic gave a dose of the inmates in the last issue, showing some of the more paranormal skills and oddities surrounding the asylum. Doctor Freust learned a bit more about herself as well, practical approaches and being dismissive of the powers that exist are an easy way to meet her end. As we enter the third installment of the series, things pick up as our dear Doctor starts to enter her stride and takes a new approach with open eyes to the inmates that surround her.

Conventional approaches take on a new twist, Doctor Freust starts to feel at home with the mad science of her father mixed along with her own blend of psychology. It’s a new vibe in the storyline for issue 3 and a welcome shift since no one likes seeing the protagonist get beaten physically and mentally throughout a series. The high note brings new twists to the inmates and their situation, instead of an atmosphere of chaos and defeat it’s a little glimmer of hope that some sense can be made of this mess.

David Miller continues to draw out a unique atmosphere within Malefic, creating interesting reactionary facial expressions while dabbling in some wildly erratic bodily gestures. The story actually gets wildly detailed in ways one wouldn’t expect while reading the issue and it’s interesting to see it executed upon when so many would venture away or sidebar the imagery. Malefic takes chances and explores things outside of normal convention and it does it with a control that ensures it’ll work for the read.

Overall the third installment changes the pace, explores some new behaviors and depth of the inmates and gives us a little more insight into what’s going on with Doctor Freust as she attempts to not end up as a splatter on the wall.

Review – Akaneiro #3

Akaneiro #3 opens and ends with nonstop action. Basically this issue was nothing but one big battle between the Red hunters and yokai, In the beginning we see Kani, who in the last issue unlocked her full power, fighting against the Ghost Werewolf Clan. With her new found powers kani is surprisingly holding her own against the Wolf demons, The moment shifts when a higher level Wolf demon appears and subdues her, the demon then tells Kani that the Red hunters hunt them down because the produce karma crystals to which they use for profit and personally gain, Kani denies the claim the wolf demon has told her, she then powers up and breaks free of the demons hold and quickly slays him.

Red hunters Mitsuo and Fumiyo make an appearance and help Kani get rid of the other demons. Things once again turn for the worst when the Demon King himself appears, his size alone is frightening, and he towers over Kani and the others, when he attacks you can see the huge power difference between he and the Red hunters and he quickly gets the upper hand with brute strength alone.

And for second it looks like the end is near for them but out of nowhere the entire clan of Red hunters including Kani’s father show up and joins the fray, At this point we see some pretty cool new characters who display some there abilities, one those characters is the head leader of the Red hunters, this guy fights the Demon King by himself and actually holds his own to point where he knocks the Demon King down to ground so Kani can give him a final attack.

Victory wouldn’t have been possible if the Demon fox that lead Kani into the trap in the 1st issue didn’t betray the Demon King and sided with the Red hunters, the only reason the fox betrayed the Demon king was because he said that the Demon King didn’t respect him. With the Demon king dead it looks as if peace on the horizon for the two clans, so to insure that peace Kani and the Red Hunter leader convinces the Fox Demon to stay and protect the home village, the Fox agrees saying “I have enjoyed being a god so far, if a whole village would like to do so, That sounds fine to me.”

The issue ends with Kani, who after a few months is now a Red hunter and is seen hunting down Yokai with Mitsuo and Fumiyo, Mitsuo comments on how Kani is enjoying herself to which Kani admits she does really love hunting down Yokai and that balance most be maintain no matter what.

Final thoughts: As a final issue Akaneiro #3 was firstrate, it was filled with action form the first page to the last. But it does leave some things to question like, how much of a impact did Kani’s actions effect the world? Instead of elaborating on that Justin Aclin skips that and acts as if nothing or no one was affected by them, which I found kind of a letdown. But besides that it was a nice adaption one worth of praise.

Review – Amala’s Blade #3 ” She’s one Cold-Hearted Girl ”

Last Issue Amalagain access to the city of Ouon, and made her way to the Ouon Royal Tower, to assassinate the Lady Strawbale for her final mission. But to her surprised Lady Strawbale was no other then Amala’s mother, who though she had died when nations where at war. Amala explains to her mother that she had taken refuge with the Sword Orphans. All seems well until the moment Lady Strawbale asks her daughter why she has come to Ouon Royal Tower and murdered all of her guards.

The coldhearted Amala tells her mother that she was there to kill her since the Vizer doesn’t think she’ll go through with it,Amala then pulls out a knive and tries to take her mother’s life, but that’s interrupted by one prince Markos men, who take both her and mother away to Avatounon Royal Tower. In Avatounon we see Prince Markos who confronts Amala about the misson she was about to complete. He then informs her that had she succeed in killing her mother she would have started another war, Markos also tells her that she was key to bringing the Modifiers and Purifiers together but now that seems unlikely, at that moment Lady Strawbale begs prince Markos to spare her life.

After trying to free herself Amala is thrown into a underground jail where she is greeted by a giant worm like creature, with her life in danger Amala jumps into action and displays some impressive moves in effort to get away from the creature, Amala almost dies when she misses a flip and almost falls into the creatures mouth.. She is then saved by her ghostly friends who help her tame the creature so she can use it to get out of the city.

The Issue ends with Prince Markos military forces confronting Amala.

Final Thoughts: This issue has some interesting moments, the first has to be the moment when Amala is about to kill her mother. Steve Horton displays a more colder side of Amala, along with a strong belief in finishing her duties as a assassin. She doesn’t feel any kind of remorse after trying to kill her mother and failing. The second moment has to be the interaction of Lady Strawbale and Prince Markos, you get the sense that Markos has feelings for her and is willing to do anything for her if she asks him to.

This issue is really solid all the way around, form the writing to the artwork it’s a great issue.

Review – Hellboy – Hellboy in Hell #3 -” A Fight For The Thorne, Winner Takes All”

Since arriving Pandemonium Hellboy has been shown a lot of his family’s legacy, guided by his uncle who explains the responsibility his father had in Pandemonium and the of sacrifices he made in order to keep Hellboy alive and out of the hands of those who wanted the throne.

In the beginning of the issue it is explain to Hellboy that his birth was going to change Pandemonium, just minutes after he was born has father called upon a great power to replace his right hand with The Right Hand Of Doom.  Being afraid of what could happen should hellboy live the other princes of Pandemonium sent angels of Destruction to Wipeout him and his family,  the plan failed due to Hellboy  accidently being sent to earth.

Moments later he is taken to the tomb of his father Azzeal who appears to be trapped in a Iceberg, this is when it gets interesting , Hellboys two older brothers appear and they tell him that how they were waiting for his arrival for some time now they comment on how being with humans has made him soft and he no longer should have the right hand of doom, A fight breaks out between them  with both brothers trying to take his arm, meanwhile his father  who is alive inside the iceberg tomb is watching his sons battle it out,  we find out that Hellboy is his favorite son the one he put all his trust in.

As the battle continues more is reveal about his arm and what power it possesses , his uncle tells them that with the arm and sword of his father , the winner would have control of their fathers army, a army powerful enough to bring down hell or heaven., he also says that the winner will also need someone wise to guide them. The fight takes a shocking turn when there uncle interrupts and takes out one of the brothers, but seconds after he along with the last of hellboys brothers are swallowed by a huge worm like creature called Leviathan came from underneath them.

Finally in the end of the issue Hellboy meets another form his past and is given news that may change the future of not only pandemonium but of his as well.

Finial thoughts: Hellboy In Hell #3 is a really good issue it reveals alot of his past something I was always curious about, What really stands out to me is how well written this arc is, nothing seems rushed you can tell Mike Mignola is taking his time in each issue every panel is well layout and easy to understand the dialog between characters is easy to follow you know who is saying what, the art on the other hand is sometimes inconsistent some characters look familiar to one another at times but it’s not a big deal  its just noticeable, overall this a good issue and one worth picking up!

Review – Conan The Barbarian – The Death #1-3

Conan The Barbarian – The Death Is a unusually story for the simple fact that Conan is vulnerable though out the arc, Struggling with his new found feelings of love and fear qualities that’s usually not shown in a Conan storyline, In the beginning of the 3 part issue Conan and Beilt along with her crew of pirates continue to sail the sea’s raising hell on all who come across the two.  One day while sailing the western ocean the a worried Belit confides in N’Yoga wondering if Conan is truly happy with her at sea. N’Yoga warns her of the death and form that moment on Belit withdraws form conan and crew, hiding away in her sleeping quarters. Meanwhile Conan and N’Gora come across a slave passenger who looks to be gravely ill, not trusting the stranger they put him back on the boat they found him in. The next morning Conan wakes up to find the slave has been killed and crew all stricken with an unknown illness, quickly he disposes the body and boat of the mysterious slave and checks in on Belit who has also fallen ill of the same sickness the crew is hit with.

As Belit lays in her death bed Conan promises to find the cure of the mysterious illness and ports at the docks of Bakal, with so much resting on his success of finding a cure Conan hits a local pub to contemplate on what he must do. After a brief encounter with the locals that was interrupted by Belit, who asks for their help to find a healer concern with her health Conan escorts her back to the Tigress not before telling him that he is free to leave her and the crew to die, for that’s not the burden she wanted for her love. Once they reach the ship the dockmaster gives Conan a hard time with the Dock saying news of Belit in town has spread around Bakal prompting Conan to pay an extra fee to stay unnoticed as he travels to the healer’s location.

There Conan meets up with a local shaman woman and is given an unknown drink that causes him to fall in a dreamlike state where he is stuck under water and has to swim ashore to a endless desert, once he awakes form his sleep the shaman asks him what did he see in his dream to which he tells her of how he was drowning in the ocean due to his armor and had to fight his way up to shore, she states that maybe the drowning and the endless desert are signifying that the weight of this quest is holding him down, he agrees and takes a walk outside to contemplate on what Belit wanted him to do which is to leave her and be free of all of it. Unsure again on what to do he goes back to the pub he had fought in earlier for a drink, again he is confronted but this time its owner of the pub who says that her mother could help him on is quest to heal everyone on the ship.

Back on Tigress he is once again confronted by the Dockmaster who this time warns Conan saying the wolves are at the gate and that Belit is a devil in the eyes of the people, angered Conan places his sword to the throat of the Dockmaster and threatens to spill his blood if he interferes. As the healer begins to cure everyone Conan and N’gora notice a crowd of hostile townsmen intended on ending Belit’s life, with sword in hand Conan and N’gora quickly get rid of them in what I say is one of the most barrack and violent skirmishes that I have seen as of late, at one point he’s hold a man he just gutted and tells the others to look at the man as he dies in his arms.

The Arc ends with Conan hearing the screams of Belit but is unable to enter the room, as he sits outside the door waiting, the healer walks out saying that she is saved and that there were complications, saying Belit was 2 months pregnant and that the baby was lost. Shocked Conan tries to comfort Belit but she doesn’t want to speak to him, as he walks out of her chambers he and N’yoga glance at one other with the narrator implying that maybe the death was not towards Belit but towards her and Conan’s relationship.

Final Thoughts: Conan The Barbarian – The Death is one of the best arcs I have read, ever since the Road of Kings Arc which was a favorite of mine , I’ve been waiting for someone to deliver another great arc and up till now I haven’t been satisfied with how arcs were written, not saying that the pass ones are terrible just that something was missing form each arc such as story and character development, but The Death in my opinion seems to cover all of those issues. Writer Brian Wood does a masterful job in this arc, the way he has Conan struggle back and forth with his emotions. Each issue shows a different side of Conan such as fear, anger, joy, love all things that make us human. To be able to include all of those things in a 3 part issue is quite a feat. Artist Declan Shalvey and Colorist Dave Stewart captures and brings all of those emotions to life with his sketch heavy style that includes alot of shading and not so much detail, surprisingly this style fits particularly well for this arc.

Review – Ex Sanguine #3 – A Romance between a Vampire and a Serial Killer

Ashley and Saul have a unique relationship, one is a supernatural immortal that thrives on blood of the corrupt of the city and Ashley is a crazed murderer with mother and father issues. While that sounds like a strange pop culture comedy duo, it very much isn’t. Ashley since her introduction has been a thorn to Saul going so far as to frame him for actions he didn’t make in an attempt to validate herself and her legacy pursuit.

Issue 3 of Ex Sanguine continues the struggle and brings in some new blood to the picture, Saul going about his own life now while Ashley continues her streak of mayhem. The difference is that other dark figures have stepped in given the news and have taken interest in what they see as a defenseless city. It’s up to Saul to keep the borders protected and his girl of mayhem in check before something bad happens. Given the streak of the story so far, that sounds like an easy task but it really isn’t as Ashley prefers to only answer to herself.

The city is already in panic as news of her kills spread like wildfire in the paper, the last thing this situation needs is a social nuke drawing in more attention and undesirables to the town. The issue is very much about Ashley’s back story which helps shed some light on what happened to make her this messed up. Fans of the series should give it a read and new readers might want to take a look at the Dark Horse preview pages for a taste of Ex Sanguine.

11th Annual San Diego Film Festival – September 26-30, 2012

 The San Diego Film Foundation announced today the headline and premiere films for the 2012 San Diego Film Festival.   Sifting through 1,300 submissions from over 55 countries, the official films represent a broad spectrum of gripping narratives. Infused with new leadership and capital, the San Diego Film Festival is poised to raise this year’s profile with nearly 200 film screenings; including 11 World Premieres, 16 WestCoast Premieres, and 4 US premieres.

 Headline Films for the 2012 San Diego Film Festival include the Opening Night Premiere of Wayne Blair’s story of love, friendship, and music inThe Sapphires as well as the Spotlight Film The Oranges, directed by Julian Farino, with an all-star cast including Hugh Laurie, Leighton Meester, Catherine Keener, and Allison Janey. The fate of his brother Bobby has changed and the stakes just a whole lot higher, unfortunately there’s so many other things going on in this story that issue 3 puts that to the immediate side. Instead we focus on the facility and the endless dirty secrets within, one of which will prove to be one of the most cruel and abusive secrets so far.

The series has been a bit everywhere to help explain background, political interests, personal stories and the mystery of the crystal, for those hoping to hit some stability I’m sorry to say you wont find it. The layers just keep coming and the mystery behind Tommy / Zero is only getting deeper, what power does he hold and why do they so desperately want to find out what it is in the arena. We found out some of those details and honestly they’re really upsetting to say the least, what was a supernatural miracle has turned into dark experimentation.

Ross and Hitch have put together a solid issue, so much so that it’s hard to speak very much on it without spoiling the issue heavily. One has to just know the powers released in this world aren’t contained to any limited group and this gift to the world is only just starting. The only thing to figure out is which side will all of these power users end up on as the larger scope reveals itself, also will there be any real conclusion with only 3 issues left to pass through? The questions keep coming at this point and it’s worrying to think of how this will possibly even wrap up right now.

Review – Spider-Men #4 – “Peter Parker Goes Home”

When Peter returns to Aunt May’s at the end of issue #3, I mentioned that was anxious to find out how this meeting was going to pan out. I also said that the story would get more depth and more emotional. I was right to think so as Spider-Men #4 with Brian Michael Bendis fills this issue with lots emotional moments, something you would expect considering the tragedies of the Ultimate universe. Bendis nails it on this issue with the interaction and emotion between the characters as it is what makes this issue very solid. Each character has a different reaction to Peter’s return, most noticeably Aunt May’s anger and confusion which leads to her fainting, or MJ who is too hurt to even see him. Then, there’s Gwen who at first is angered but quickly over it and acting like a normal teenager all the while young Miles is borderline obsessing over Peter’s web shooters. Every character has a different reaction to his appearance which I find exuberant.

Once again Sara Pichelli brings all of Bendis work to life in this issue, accenting the moments of this series with emotional details. She visibly catches the moments that I noted earlier about with sharp attention in each panel. Pichelli’s work in this series and series of the past demonstrate that she is a master of detailing. Her work is always on point, from character designs, action movement sequences, page layouts and perspective. She is in my opinion, one of the best artists Marvel has right now and I know I’m not the only one who feels the same way.

Final thoughts: When reading issues #1-4 you can tell that Bendis enjoys writing for Spider-Men, his work is very consistent while working in humor and delivering emotion in different situations. Every character is handled with a personal touch that brings out their unique feelings. In the end Spider-Men #4 is the best issue so far and is a turning point for this story, hopefully Bendis can finish this off strong.
