Review – I Shall Remain I PC

Story:

Set in an alternate timeline, the Nazis release a deadly virus on US territory. As one of the survivors, you must fight off Zombies and gather allies as you travel. I found the story to be alittle uninteresting for the most part, but then again it’s a post-apocalypse ARPG so you shouldn’t expect much when comes to story telling

Gameplay/Controls:

As an ARPG game, I Shall Remain combines role-playing and strategic aspects to it which makes it unique, the game features a real-time progression system similar to a standard RPG game, you can upgrade/ enhance your weapons and add tons of abilities to your character as you play along. Being a top down shooter with no gamepad support, the controls are standard PC, W,S,A,D with the mouse controlling your characters view of vison, the controls are similar to games like Gauntlet and Diablo. For most part the game plays smoothly, there are a few bugs, like when zombie you trigger a zombie event which causes a herd of zombies to charge at you, I had hit box issues a few times.  The difficult settings are easy, normal, hard, and impossible, if you want a real challenge play with impossible settings with hardcore mode on, hardcore mode makes the game more challenging for the simple fact that if the player dies then the game is over and you must start over, I gave this a shot but after dying a few times I gave it up. Because it has realtime rpg like elements boss battles are more in your face, for example you can be walking a find a herd of zombies which triggers a boss battle, that’s one the things I found different and fun about this game.

Visuals / Presentation:

I shall remain has good visuals, must notably the lighting, they truly do a good job making the dark enough to give you a since of the unknown despite it being a Top-Down shooter, usually games like this the field of view is so wide open it makes the game extremely easy, but Scorpius Games    do a great job making dark enough for players to keep their attention strictly on what’s in front of them and what the character can see through his or hers flashlights radius. The graphics are solid as well textures look nice and detail, the music also contributes to the games eerie and creep environments

Features:

The game features 3 modes, Prologue, Story Mode and Survive. The prologue mode is like a demo/ tutorial which helps the player get familiar with the game, Story mode is basically the core game, players play through the main story, and finally Survive mode which is exactly what it sounds like, you must try and survive as waves of zombies attack, each wave the infected get stronger and a bit more challenging.

Conclusion:

I Shall Remain is a entertaining ARPG game with good visuals, modes and an in-depth leveling system makes the replay ability of this game high which is always a plus. So if you’re looking for a game with good reply value with a low price tag then I Shall Remain is the game you need.

Review – Stonerid I Pc

forest_10
Press R on the keyboard to change worlds
  • Genre: 2D platformer
  • Developer: Enitvare
  • Publisher: Enitvare
  • Release Date: Outnow

Features:
– 32 extensive levels with 2 parallel, differently designed worlds
– 31 bonus levels especially for players who like new challenges
– 5 diverse lands (forest, winterland, caverns, cemetery, swamps)

– unique gameplay mechanisms
– wonderful artwork
– beautiful, moody soundtrack

Stonerid is a 2D platformer by indie developer Enitvare, It’s not your typical platformer, Stonerid has a interesting twist to it, players are given two parallel worlds to which they have to use cohesively in order to stop a mysterious toxic substances on Atronast Mountain. With 32 beautifully hand drawn levels filled with crazy traps and monsters making each level increasingly more difficult then the next. swamps_stonerid_5What makes Stonerid so intriguing is that it test the players recollection skills, for example one dimension will have a cliff and  below that will be filled with spikes, now if you switch to the other dimension you’ll see something similar only this time there aren’t any spikes but in the center a mushroom that launches you in to the air, so you have to jump from the cliff and time the dimension switch in order to land on the mushroom with launches you to another platform. As you play along the puzzles become harder, so expect to died alot. Stonerid is frustrating stonerid_winterland_2so casual gamers beware. With the pros comes cons and one of my biggest beefs with Stonerid is the controls, usually 2d platformers use the same control scheme as traditional Pc games with w,s,a,d, as the setup, but stonerid is different, players use the arrow keys instead which could throw some of you off at first, But then again that problem can be eliminated if you have a Xbox 360 controller you can use instead.

Although Stonrid isn’t a original game it’s still a fun and challenging game from Enitvare.

You can find Stonerid on Steam Greenlight

Review – Conan The Barbarian – The Death #1-3

Writer: Brian Wood
Artist: Declan Shalvey
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Cover Artist: Massimo Carnevale
Published by: Dark Horse Comics

Conan The Barbarian – The Death Is a unusually story for the simple fact that Conan is vulnerable though out the arc, Struggling with his new found feelings of love and fear qualities that’s usually not shown in a Conan storyline, In the beginning of the 3 part issue Conan and Beilt along with her crew of pirates continue to sail the sea’s raising hell on all who come across the two.  One day while sailing the western ocean the a worried Belit confides in N’Yoga wondering if Conan is truly happy with her at sea. N’Yoga warns her of the death and form that moment on Belit withdraws form conan and crew, hiding away in her sleeping quarters. Meanwhile Conan and N’Gora come across a slave passenger who looks to be gravely ill, not trusting the stranger they put him back on the boat they found him in. The next morning Conan wakes up to find the slave has been killed and crew all stricken with an unknown illness, quickly he disposes the body and boat of the mysterious slave and checks in on Belit who has also fallen ill of the same sickness the crew is hit with.

As Belit lays in her death bed Conan promises to find the cure of the mysterious illness and ports at the docks of Bakal, with so much resting on his success of finding a cure Conan hits a local pub to contemplate on what he must do. After a brief encounter with the locals that was interrupted by Belit, who asks for their help to find a healer concern with her health Conan escorts her back to the Tigress not before telling him that he is free to leave her and the crew to die, for that’s not the burden she wanted for her love. Once they reach the ship the dockmaster gives Conan a hard time with the Dock saying news of Belit in town has spread around Bakal prompting Conan to pay an extra fee to stay unnoticed as he travels to the healer’s location.

There Conan meets up with a local shaman woman and is given an unknown drink that causes him to fall in a dreamlike state where he is stuck under water and has to swim ashore to a endless desert, once he awakes form his sleep the shaman asks him what did he see in his dream to which he tells her of how he was drowning in the ocean due to his armor and had to fight his way up to shore, she states that maybe the drowning and the endless desert are signifying that the weight of this quest is holding him down, he agrees and takes a walk outside to contemplate on what Belit wanted him to do which is to leave her and be free of all of it. Unsure again on what to do he goes back to the pub he had fought in earlier for a drink, again he is confronted but this time its owner of the pub who says that her mother could help him on is quest to heal everyone on the ship.

Back on Tigress he is once again confronted by the Dockmaster who this time warns Conan saying the wolves are at the gate and that Belit is a devil in the eyes of the people, angered Conan places his sword to the throat of the Dockmaster and threatens to spill his blood if he interferes. As the healer begins to cure everyone Conan and N’gora notice a crowd of hostile townsmen intended on ending Belit’s life, with sword in hand Conan and N’gora quickly get rid of them in what I say is one of the most barrack and violent skirmishes that I have seen as of late, at one point he’s hold a man he just gutted and tells the others to look at the man as he dies in his arms.

The Arc ends with Conan hearing the screams of Belit but is unable to enter the room, as he sits outside the door waiting, the healer walks out saying that she is saved and that there were complications, saying Belit was 2 months pregnant and that the baby was lost. Shocked Conan tries to comfort Belit but she doesn’t want to speak to him, as he walks out of her chambers he and N’yoga glance at one other with the narrator implying that maybe the death was not towards Belit but towards her and Conan’s relationship.

Final Thoughts: Conan The Barbarian – The Death is one of the best arcs I have read, ever since the Road of Kings Arc which was a favorite of mine , I’ve been waiting for someone to deliver another great arc and up till now I haven’t been satisfied with how arcs were written, not saying that the pass ones are terrible just that something was missing form each arc such as story and character development, but The Death in my opinion seems to cover all of those issues. Writer Brian Wood does a masterful job in this arc, the way he has Conan struggle back and forth with his emotions. Each issue shows a different side of Conan such as fear, anger, joy, love all things that make us human. To be able to include all of those things in a 3 part issue is quite a feat. Artist Declan Shalvey and Colorist Dave Stewart captures and brings all of those emotions to life with his sketch heavy style that includes alot of shading and not so much detail, surprisingly this style fits particularly well for this arc.

Spartacus: Vengeance trailer debuts

We had a teaser video and breakdown the last time, today we have a special treat with the trailer for Spartacus, it’s violent and it explains a bit more of what to actually expect this season. Loving some of the highlighted lines for the clip, hopefully it gets your motivation up to see the new series next month as well.

“Spartacus: Vengeance” will premiere on STARZ Friday, January 27th at 10pm ET. Set those DVR’s or get ready for some bloodbaths because it’s almost here.

Spartacus: Vengeance sneak peek plus video preview

Spartacus Vengeance is on the verge of  return, the show comes back in just about 7 weeks, to prepare for that we’ve gotten a small look at the opener for the show with Liam McIntyre as the lead. For those who hate spoilers, just stop now as we might blow something key for you guys.

============

Our scene opens with speared horsemen and a dual sworded Spartacus leading them down a trail, we get a graphic showing of his prowess for combat, the calculations in how he handles his surroundings and his toughness. As his allied team emerges from behind the rocks it becomes a ballet of brutal engagement with he and his followers carefully tackling the entire group. We see the numbers growing and Spartacus throwing himself into the front line to protect his men and destroy the odds, each strike and enemy taken down with sheer force. The intensity the show brings is just as strong as ever, the story though, has a new path to expand his world.

Visually it’s a series of struggle and drama, his men are battered and tired but willing and Spartacus is fighting with it all on the line, no injury is too much as he executes each opponent. The camera team showcases critical strikes and dominance in slow motion cuts from both sides in the heated exchange.

The scene sets the tempo for what Spartacus is up against, he has strength and courage but his power also rests in the loyalty and numbers of his team. We’re teased that Spartacus will take notice and become emotionally aware of the death that follows with such a campaign that he’s leading. Liam McIntyre feels passionate about the character development coming to the season and the potential for viewers.

Update: The Hollywood Reporter is linking the video publicly so we’ll pass it along too

Bethesda announces Dishonored

Many may not know or may have forgotten about the acquisition of Arkane Studios by Zenimax last year. Today they’re here with Dishonored a FPA (First Person Action) game already in development on the 360, PS3 and PC of course.

What do we know so far? Not much, Raphael Colantonio the lead design man for Arx Fatalis and Harvey Smith from Deus Ex are on board but the rest is being held for Game Informer who seems to have a full exclusivity agreement as the Dishonored website links to GI. At this point I usually refer you to their website but I’ll just paraphrase the important parts from the cover article topic.

The GI crew got a hands on with the game, the design itself leads to freedom of choice, a game about an assassin that doesn’t have to do it. About having the ability to use stealth and infiltration techniques using the most brutal methods just because you can. Placing full control on the choice of the user instead of forcing the hand of the player. In a sense it’s what many FPS games like the original Deus Ex tried to create for players. A sense of control or choice with every single action.

Champions Online goes Free-to-Play

For many gamers, online subscriptions are a luxury that often face the first stage of budget cuts, taking this into account Cryptic Studios has jumped forward with a Free-to-Play initiative with Champions Online to help maintain and possibly grow their population as a whole.

Here are some quotes from the team on their latest move.

Beginning Q1 2011, Champions Online will offer a free-to-play gameplay option. Everyone can download, play and enjoy Champions Online at absolutely no cost!

All you’ll need to do is download the game and begin playing. It will be a great opportunity to head back to the Champions universe to see what’s changed, spend time with your friends and enjoy a top-tier MMO without spending a dime.

We plan on entering our free-to-play beta on November 9, and to launch the new, free-to-play version of Champions Online in the first quarter of 2011. We can’t wait to grow the game with you, and we hope you’re as excited as we are!

Having participated in the beta I can say I was tempted to pursue Champions Online but I never had enough free time to commit to a subscription for the game. With a free gaming model I can see myself jumping into the game for casual fights and character creation. Hopefully I will not be the only one taking advantage of this shift.
