Dark Horse Comics will end its Star Wars partnership in 2015

With the New Year comes new beginnings and Disney is starting off with major changes for the future. One of those changes are the pulling of all marvel based video games, an assortment list games have already bit the dust, Spider-Man games Edge of Time, Shattered Dimensions, Friend or Foe, and Web of Shadows, as well as X-Men entries Destiny, Origins: Wolverine,  So how The Amazing Spider-Man game hasn’t been removed form shelves. Digital stores like Steam, Xbox Live and PSN have also taken down its marvel collection of games.

Just recently Disney made another move with the Star Wars franchise; first they announced a new Star Wars Episode VII film with J.J. Abrams as the supposed Director, then at the start of this year they ended its partnership with Dark horse. For years Dark horse has kept the Star Wars franchise alive through its comic publications, Dark horse rep Mike Richardson released this statement:

The End of an Era

All things come to pass. So too, do all licensed deals. I am sad to report that Disney, the new owner of Lucasfilm, has notified us here at Dark Horse of their intention to move the Star Wars publishing license to another of their recent acquisitions, Marvel Comics, beginning in 2015. This will end a partnership that has lasted more than two decades.

For those who are new to the industry, Dark Horse revolutionized the treatment of comics based on films. After a history of movie properties being poorly handled with little regard for execution and continuity, Dark Horse took a new approach, carefully choosing licenses and approaching them with excitement and creative energy. Our goal was to create sequels and prequels to the films we loved, paying careful attention to quality and detail, essentially treating those films as though they were our own. Star Wars has been the crown jewel of this approach. We began chasing the title as far back as 1989, and with the launch of Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy’s Dark Empire, a new era in comics was born. I’m not ashamed to admit that we were Star Wars geeks, and we have been determined to spare neither effort nor expense in the pursuit of excellence.

It is ironic that this announcement comes at a time when Dark Horse is experiencing its most successful year ever. For obvious reasons, we have prepared for this eventuality by finding new and exciting projects to place on our schedule for 2015 and beyond. Will they take the place of Star Wars? That’s a tall order, but we will do our best to make that happen. In the meantime, 2014 may be our last year at the helm of the Star Wars comics franchise, but we plan to make it a memorable one. We know that fans of the franchise will expect no less. The Force is with us still.

Mike Richardson

As you can see Disney has plans for the franchise, and let’s hopes they can’t continue the success Dark horse has established. As for Dark Horse, the loss of the Star Wars license is a significant loss, but with its future and present franchises they have established the loss shouldn’t affect them in the long run and recent news has stated so (Year Of The Horse). The concern most fans have with this move is that Disney will not give the Comics the proper attention it deserves.

Review – Vinylmation Park Starz Series 1 – Big Al & Jose

I was lucky enough to get my hands on Disney’s new Vinylmation Park Starz series 1.  The Park Starz series takes iconic Disneyland “characters” from all the parks and puts them into highly detailed vinyl form.  The series features 11 different figures along with a mystery chaser.  The figures included are, Figment (Journey Into Imagination), Goat and New Guinea Boy (it’s a small world), Bride (The Haunted Mansion), Robot Butler (Horizons), Ice Gator (Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park), Skeleton Pirate (Pirates Of The Caribbean), José (Enchanted Tiki Room), Big Al (Country Bear Jamboree), Yeti (Expedition Everest), Abraham Lincoln (Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln) and Giant Squid (20,000 Leagues Under The Sea).  The two tins I bought contained Big Al  from Country Bear Jamboree (a personal favorite) and José from the Enchanted Tiki Room.   José the parrot is very well detailed.  He has little holes on his sides, that you do not even see,for the perch he comes with to fit into.  The paint is wonderful and the colors are extremely vibrant.  He is quite heavy for such a small figure and is a really adorable collectible.  For those of you who really want this one and may carry around a scale when you shop (and really, who doesn’t?)  he weighs in at 6.1 ounces, tin and all.  As mentioned above I also got Big Al, which is one that I really wanted!  He, like José, is also very detailed.  Big Al comes equipped with a little yellow guitar and a lot of personality in his face.  He, in my opinion is one of the best looking in the series.  Again, like all the figures in the series the paint is perfect as is all the detail.  For those shoppers with their scales out, Big Al weighs a hefty 8.0 ounces!

I do not have one bad thing to say about these figures, they have detail in the way that only Disney can detail things.  From the heavy-duty tin to the paint and design of each figure.  The tins that the figures come in are display worthy themselves.  They are quite large, metal and have awesome graphics.  This series is available at various locations, however your best bet will be at one of the D-Street locations in either California and Florida.  I recommend getting these quickly, at the Anaheim California D-Street location they were selling very quickly with people buying both the individual figures as well as people buying by the case!  This series is sure to sell out extremely fast and once they are out, there are no more.

As a quick note to collectors both old and new, if you buy a figure at D-Street, open it and find that you don’t want that particular one they have a trading system in place.  You can exchange your figure once per day.  If you do exchange it, what you get is not in your control, so you may get something you like more but you may also get a figure you like less.  It’s a gamble but it’s also really fun and takes some of the sting out of the expensive price tag.

Release Date: October 21st 2011
Price: $18.95

Author note: These figures are are available now (released Friday, October 21st) at various locations including D-Street in California and Florida.

Avengers assemble at Comic Con after all?

Marvel has already admitted to having no Avengers panel in Hall H this year. But, that doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be any Avengers about.

The Hall H presentation last year was nerdgasm worthy but it was only seen by a few thousand. That is just not fitting for what
Marvel/Disney has planned for Earths mightiest heroes this year.
Early reports are claiming a Massive Viral marketing campaign that will encompass the entire show floor unlike anything SDCC has seen before. Shield will be on hand with vehicles, providing “security” and even a recruitment booth. Also, much like last year with Odin’s throne, set pieces of varying sizes will be on display. There is even a rumor of the helicarrier bridge set piece being on hand.

There is also word that various cast members from The Avengers will be lurking about as there availability allows. (They are still filming)

Speaking of film, There is a word of a first look teaser trailer!
Now filming is only a about two months in so it probably wont be very long or in depth.

There of course has been no confirmation from Marvel/Disney and it is unlikely they well confirm or deny anything before the show.

Thor 2 News

Marvel and Disney have recently announced Don Payne will be the single writer for Thor 2 which is set to hit around June 26, 2013. Many of us assumed ($439 million worldwide) that a sequel was going to follow, what we didn’t see coming was that two of the writers and the Director would not return. Many reports have mention Kenneth Branagh will not direct but still be part of the production process.

Zack Stentz & Ashley Edward Miller who co-wrote the sript for summer hit wanted to end on a high note and will not return. Payne who wrote the screenplays for My Super Ex-Girlfriend and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and  for TV shows The Simpsons & Men Behaving Badly. With that said the big question is “Will it be as good as the last movie?

Tron Legacy – Comic-Con 2010 Trailer

While we’re a little late to the game with it, here is the latest teaser for Tron Legacy from SDCC 2010. Looks pretty good for a new age successor, we weren’t able to get in the Hall for the panel so we’ll leave it at this for now.

TRON: Legacy coming to SDCC 2010

The time is almost here, as San Diego Comic-Con 2010 draws closer all the juicy information spills out for the masses. Tonight word of TRON: Legacy has hit the web with a date and time for those eager to see the latest developments and teasers at the show.

At 11:15am on Thursday July 22, Disney will open the doors to Hall H and allow lucky visitors to seat themselves for a panel discussion with the filmmakers and stars from the film. Joe Kosinski, Sean Bailey, Steven Lisberger and others such as Jeff Bridges, Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde will be present. Patton Oswalt will direct the Q&A for the panel and play host to announce each glimpse at the film.

For those who don’t line up at 7-8am or earlier to get into Hall H, Disney will have an interactive TRON booth on the floor at aisle 3712 to preview new merchandise and apparel for the new movie. Disney Interactive Studios will also have the new TRON: Evolution video game on hand for everyone to play.

If you have a ticket and the means to get there in time, the panel should be a great way to kick off SDCC 2010.
