The Issue ends when Conan runs into the hooded woman, who tells him to follow her so he can escape Kwarad’s trackers.

Conclusion: This issue was again simple and straight forward but also feature an unexpected death, other than that it’s your typical Conan issue with a character reveal cliffhanger at the end.

King Conan : Wolves Beyond The Border Part 1 of 4

Writer:Timothy Truman

Artist:Tomas Giorello

Colorist:Jose Villarrubia

Cover Artist:Tomas Giorello

Published by: Dark horse Comics27956

For me the most enjoyable comic series has been the King Conan series by Timothy Truman, Conan is a well establish king now and spends most of his time reminiscing and telling his tales to a scribe, while the stories of King Conan are simplistic and straight forward at its core, it’s still very enjoyable due to the fact of Truman’s writing, The Wolves Beyond The Border focuses on the Pictish Crown a treasure that has mysterious power. When Conan is approached by Gault a Ranger who has fought with Conan in the pass, tells him of a battle he and his fellow comrades’ encounter Valerian and Kwarada and other leaders form the Pict’s great tribes, a fire breaks out and takes everyone out, but Gault escapes with the Crown of Pictish’s. He continues to tell him how the crown’s power was driving him crazy so he decided to get rid of it by taking it to Conan.

Excited by the story Gault has told him Conan takes the crown with curiosity begins to examine it, a stone on the crown starts to glow and a voice starts to talk to Conan, it tells him of a story of two bloodlines  one being the founding father of the Cimmerian’s were allies. When the king of Valusia Kull hands the stone to his pictish ally the Spear-Slayer Brule, A great cataclysm happens and both bloodlines almost becomes extinct, within the stone a crow is flying towards Conan as he is visually shown, the crow transforms into a female warrior who challenges Conan to come find the truth of the stones history.

Conclusion: As expected of most King Conan issues the pacing is fast, Truman doesn’t reveal a lot despite the pacing. As setup chapter Wolves beyond the border part 1 isn’t a action heavy, instead it hooks you with a very interesting cliff hanger.

When they get to the port Conan’s body is no longer there and they notice a ship leaving, the issue ends with heavily wounded Conan rowing away on the boat and the assassins vowing to follow Conan to wherever seas he may go even to hell if needed.—————————

The Conqueror starts off fast from the jump, Truman doesn’t waste anytime getting into it. The pacing is extremely fast, mostly due to the fact that its a continuation story, so character development and other things that involves a new arc aren’t really explored feature in this issue, So new readers may want to catch up on some back issues in order to figure what’s going on. that aside King Conan: The Conqueror Part 1 is a typical Conan issue, and i mean that in a good way.

Timothy Truman’s King Conan arcs are completely different from Brian Woods, While woods likes to show more emotions in his version of Conan, Truman keeps Conan at his purest and true savagery nature which in actuality is Conan’s true character. Artist and Colorist Tomas Giorello, Jose Villarrubia are back and bring that consistency we all come to expect from the both of them.

As expected in a first issue nothing big really happened, Turman uses The Conqueror Part 1 as a setup for the next issue so expect more in the next issue.

In my last review of King Conan: Hour of the Dragon Part 5, I said that Truman’s interpitation was starting to look real promising, And I was right on that assumption, Hour of  the Dragon Part 5 is outstanding. Truman and Giorello should be praise for the work they are doing with Robert E. Howard’s original story.

Issue#5 plot outline is simple; Conan rescues the damsel in distress, who is locked inside the tower, But the same time Truman makes it more appealing by adding more twists and turns to it which making this issue extremely entertaining, there was never a dull moment, Truman does a wonderful job balancing action a disposition throughout the issue, and Tomas Giorello’s art work is on point, the details of each panel drawing is beautiful, he illustrates each characters emotion to perfection.

Conan is determined to regain his kingdom, and he does so with a cunning approach, using the secret passage ways below the kingdom Conan silently makes his move and successful rescues Albiona. And with the help of the high priest Hadrathus they escape on harmed. Hadrathus then tells them that in order to destroy Xaltotun he must steal the gem Taracus took form Xaltotun’s tomb as he slept. The Issue ends with Taracus giving a mysterious hooded man orders to hunt down and kill Conan.

This is a perfect issue in my opinion, the story is complete and it makes sense. Like I said Truman balances everything well in this issue. And for that I can’t wait to see how this ends

After escaping Taracus dungeon, Conan continues to ride further away from Aquilonian, he finally reaches the border Aquilonian , He then comes across a few soldiers harassing an old woman. Conan jumps in and defends the old woman, and with a little help Conan makes quick work of the soldiers.

22194

The old woman introduces herself as Zelata, she is known as a witch by many, Zelata also seems to know exactly who Conan is and decides to help him. At this point we learn more about Zelata, we find out that she’s protected by the animals in the surrounding area, and that she considers them to be her children, we also find out she has to power to show people there past and future. She demonstrates this power by touching Conan’s head, In his visions Conan sees that the people of his kingdom believe that he is truly dead, and so they crown Baron Amalric of Nemedia as king. But that’s not the only thing he is shown, at the same time he sees that the wizard Xaltotun is also making a move, and he has a very powerful gem with him, a gem that Conan has seen before.

The next day Conan thanks Zelata, and promises to paid his debt to her. He then rides westward to find his commanders and generals, again at this point we see how the neighboring villages have been ravaged and burned to the ground. Conan then comes across the plantation of Servius Galaninus who is an ally, he ask’s Servius is he’s heard from Publius,Trocero, General Pallantides and Prospero. Servius informs him that they all went into hiding once they heard Conan had died, he also tells him that the people are afraid because they believe he was cursed by sorcery, Servius then tells him that all who are loyal where banished or executed, Also in Tarantia they have captured the young lady, and has locked her in the Iron Tower.

Conan realizes that young lady in the tower is none other than Zenboia, he then quickly jumps on his horse and races to Tarantia alone.

Final thoughts: This issue was mostly a setup chapter in my opinion, although we did get the introduction of a new character that looks as if she will play a big role in the next few issues, but besides that nothing special happened, the next issue looks promising.

Review – King Conan: Hour Of The Dragon Part 3

Writer: Timothy Truman
Artist: Tomas Giorello
Colorist: Jose Villarrubia
Cover Artist: Gerald Parel
Published by: Dark Horse Comics

After reading the latest issue of King Conan: The Hour of the Dragon part 3 three words came into mind, Violence, Infatuation, and betrayal. The beginning of the issue starts off with violence; we see Conan fighting for his life against a Grey-Ape of the Forest of Vilayet Sea, with the help of Zenboia. Conan was able to defeat the Grey-Ape. The fight between Conan and the Grey-Ape is a barbaric one, you can see the blood-lust in both of their eyes as the jump for each other’s throat’s; this was well depicted by Tomas Giorello.

After their encounter with the Grey-Ape, Conan and Zenboia continue to escape the dungeon; meanwhile we see Tarascus and his followers are conspiring against the wizard Xaltotun. During that time Conan and Zenboia are seen listening to Tarascus as he explains his plan of taking control of the wizard.

22193

With Taracus in his sights and filled with anger for what has happened to him and his kingdom Conan leaps in for the kill despite Zenboia’s warning. And again he finds himself in another violent battle only this time it’s against one of Tarascus guardsman.

After missing his chance of killing Taracus, Conan and Zenboia finally escape; But Zenboia alters the plan and insists on staying in order for Conan to escape, her devotion to keep him safe somewhat baffles Conan, to the point he promises to comeback for her as soon as he can. The issue ends with Conan sneaking his way to the Fountain of Thrallos a place Zenboia promised him a horse for his escape, That plan almost fails when the guardsman he fought earlier is there waiting for him, But this time around Conan easily defeats the guardsman and rides off.

Final thoughts: The thing that stood out me in this issue is Zenboia’s infatuation/devotion to a man she doesn’t know is somewhat bizarre, it reminds me of Lord of the Rings Éowyn relationship with Aragorn, where she was attracted to Aragorn’s heroism. The difference between Zenboia and Eowyn is that one displays more love while the other displays more devotion.

In the end the relationship between Conan and Zenboia is what keeps me hooked, I want to see how that relationship falls apart, and how it effects Truman’s version of Conan.

King Conan – The Hour of the Dragon Part 2 continues with a weakened Conan battling against King Nemeda and his followers Tarascus and Valerius. We see the emotions of Conan as he slashes his way through the herds of men, until finally being stop by Xaltotun himself who casts a spell that knocks him out. Now with Conan out of the way Nemeda plans to take out Prospero but Xaltotun takes him in as his hostage. Now locked in a chamber of King Tarascus in Beliverus, Conan wakes up and  is once again confronted by the sorcerer. Xaltotun offers Conan his freedom and his Kingdom back only if he declares allegiance to him, As a true warrior and Cimmerian Conan declines his offer and threatens the evil sorcerer, Xaltotun displays more of his power by casting a spell on Conan and telling him his threats are futile against his powers.

Later that night a guard comes in and starts to harass Conan as he’s chained up, that quickly ends with Conan smashing the face with a single punch. After the body of the guard is dragged out by extra guards Conan notices a light coming closer to the cell and a set of keys opening the door A woman’s voice calls out to him, she tells Conan that her name is Zenobie and that shes has been looking for him for a long time. In tears Zenobie asks Conan for help in which he agrees.

The issue ends with the two trying escaping the underground chamber, But some realize that some else is in the chambers with them.

Final thoughts: This issues is relatively short not much is going on as far as plot development, the biggest twist is probably the moment where Xaltotun asks Conan to follow him. Writer Timothy Truman really doesn’t dive into character disposition his style is straight forward fast paced and filled with lots of action like the Conan arcs in the pass. Artist Tomas Giorello does a wonderful job capturing and Illustrating key moments during the issue.

Review – King Conan – The Hour Of The Dragon Part 1 of 6

The trio of Timothy Truman,Tomas Giorello and Jose Villarrubia team up once again to bring us another one of Robert E. Howards classic’s. King Conan – The Hour of The Dragon #1 is amazingly written issue packed with lots of disposition throughout this issue, like in the past King Conan arcs it’s told in narrative form with Conan as the narrator.

This issue starts with the wizard Orastes and his Amalric’s Tarascus the brother of King Nemeda and Valerius the former king of Aquilonian reviving the ancient wizard Xaltotun. With the wizard awaken the three desperately ask for his assistances which he surprisingly accepts and they begin to devise a plan to get rid Conan. Meanwhile it is the night before battle and we see Conan asleep but is awaken by a bad dream. Two of his men who heard him screaming rush in, Conan tells them that he feels a evil presences awaiting in the shadows ready to take him. At that moment his scouts trumps sound off which states the start of the war, As he starts to put his armor the evil aura he sensed earlier comes back and it turns out to be Xaltotun who then casts a spell on Conan that paralyzes him.

Without trying to give away the hole plot I’ll just say things get real thick at the end of this issue for the Cimmerian known as Conan. Writer timothy Truman ends the issue on a cliff hanger with Conan facing impossible odds.

Artist Tomas Giorello brings his heavily shaded and detail style to this arc, like most of his work Giorello’s panels are well illustrated and consisted all throughout the issue making it easy for readers to follow.

The hour of the Dragon #1 is a great first issue and going by the trios past work together this arc is going to be just as good as King Conan – The Phoenix On The Sword.
