Virtual Piggy Teams up with Habbo Hotel

Parental locks on mobile devices is standard for most people, you don’t want to wake up to an empty bank account while your child or anyone really, talks about how they just bought a new outfit and some hats for their character that were a steal at 50000 credits / whatever you had in your checking.

Habbo Hotel has teamed up with Virtual Piggy with the same aim to handle things on the PC side, using a parental control system that allows for multiple payment methods but also allowance levels to those users so you can rest a little easier on monetary issues in your life.

Habbo is still a thriving community for teens and virtual drama, but least they can try to look stylish while taking part in it and not have their parents hovering to see if they’ve broken the bank.

Is it still scary to just randomly let them buy things online? Sure, it’s completely mind-blowing because for many of us, in our time we browsed online, begged parents and if we were lucky, we were able to buy those items and then stood in awe of e-commerce.  The landscape is changing so its important to have features like Virtual Piggy in place so teens can become a little savvy in how these systems work with at least some safeguards.

3000AD and DC Entertainment working on Line of Defense Comic Book

Comics and video games are always crossing up in one way or another, today 3000AD and DC are bringing a comic called Line of Defense based on the 3000AD lore. Taking readers into space where Galactic Command is at odds with opposing forces taking over resources on a distant planet and super weapon is in the works to make it even worse.

The comic will launch with a special public first issue at San Diego Comic-Con this year at the DC Comics booth and it will serve as a launch platform for the upcoming video game as well. Private viewings will be available at popular conventions for industry like E3 as well, hopefully I can sneak a look at it there when we hit the show in June.

Some back story on the comic from 3000AD:

For many years the Terran military forces of GALCOM have been engaged in various conflicts with the Insurgents – a splinter group of military personnel opposed to the Terran governing body. In a surprise move, the Insurgents setup shop on the long abandoned planet of Lyrius, previously used by GALCOM for weapons testing, R&D and other forms of military operations. This move wouldn’t normally warrant a deep space troop deployment, except for the fact that the Insurgents were rumored to be developing a super weapon on the planet. The “Firefight” comic tells the story of the brave direct action team sent by GALCOM to neutralize the threat and destroy the weapon.

As a prequel we can only hope it serves as a full-bodied story and not just something designed to leave a lot of cliffhanger moments, comics are a great medium to build attention off when used properly. We’ll have to see how it turns out when preview pages start making their way out.

End of Nations heads into Beta, shows off in new trailer

End of Nations is rolling into beta status soon, to kick that off the folks at Trion have unveiled a video teaser to get everyone amped up about their massive online free-to-play RTS. We got a chance to sit down with the team at a preview event last month and the impressions were good, while the dynamic online was a shift back to reminders of C&C 4 it didn’t try to pretend it was ever offering base building capability.

Users will need to calculate their expenditures in End of Nations as they build their company teams to go into battle, as things heat up those 3 groups will be all that helps determine the chance of success as all out war strikes. Forgot to include AA into your ground troop package? Good luck with that one, the same applies to any group though and everyone will need to be on top of their game in team battles to push the other side into submission.

Sign up for the beta here and watch the trailer for a taste of what End of Nations is about.

Spirit Tales starts closed beta on March 15

KoramGame announced today their title Spirit Tales will be entering Closed Beta testing later this month, the 3D fantasy MMORPG still is accepting sign-ups and they will also be distributing keys through a number of other websites as well to boost their traffic in. If you’re a hardcore fan of the project I would say look into trying to snag those external keys as they’re said to come with additional prizes too.

The team prides itself on character depth, customization and features like pets as well. Once characters are designed it’s off to venture across a fantasy world to fight creatures and unlock the Spirit form of the character for extra damage. Combine that with the Chibi / Super Deformed styling and the game can be quite addictive for those looking to get a 3D twist on the genre after the glory years of Ragnarok passed. Check out the screens for more details and the character art and video below for even more details on the game.

Review – The Guild: Zaboo

This issue is Zaboo centric, hence the fact that it’s called “Zaboo.”  We start with a flashback of Zaboo as a kid, still game obsessed, girl crazy and just a little “different.”  We learn that his relationship with his Mom has always been over the top and even though she’s a bit crazy there is nothing that she won’t do for her son.  We see this first hand, self-inflicted wet willy anyone?  Flash forward, even though he’s not a kid anymore not much has changed except that he now has friends, The Guild.  He’s into Codex and he believes she’s into him due to some misplaced emoticons.  To go help and finally meet (in real life) his true love, Zaboo stages an elaborate escape from his mother’s house.  After an awesome Saved By The Bell reference, Zaboo’s Mom finally catches up to him at the bus station and the battle royale takes place.  He finally gets to meet Codex, but will his Mom give up that easy?

I love these Guild comics so much.  They are ridiculously funny and so entertaining.  This issue features “mini-games” and a Choose Your Own Adventure style throughout the comic which makes it really unique and fun.  Even though this issue is Zaboo based, all the characters are present and captured perfectly both in tone and for the most part in looks.  The only complaint I have about this series is that it doesn’t come out more often!  Felicia Day has really created something endearing both in the comic and the series.  Definitely pick up this issue (unless you don’t like good things) and while you’re there pick up the past issues as well.  Comic’d!

DC Universe soon to be free to play

DC Universe fans will soon be a available at a greatly reduced rate of free. Here is the news and breakdown on the three tiers from Sony.

Sony Online Entertainment today announced a new free-to-play business model for its popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) game DC Universe Online (DCUO) — where players have the freedom to become legendary fighting alongside DC Comics icons like Superman, Batman and The Jokerin an ever-evolving online action adventure that has already logged more than 42 million hours of super-powered gameplay action by players since its launch earlier this year.

Beginning late October, players will be able to download and access DCUO for free on both the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC. As part of this transition, SOE is introducing three new access levels to the game: Free, Premium and Legendary. All three levels will provide access to open world gameplay and missions, general game updates and fixes to the game, with each level offering different game options and benefits.

“When we launched DC Universe Online, we introduced a very different brand of massive online game driven by fast action combat to PC and PS3™gamers and with that, we discovered a new type of online gamer,” said John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment. “We’ve listened to our community, and we’ve determined that the free-to-play model is the best fit for DC Universe Online.”

Smedley added, “Our philosophy embraces learning from our experience and as a pioneer in the free-to-play space with proven successful games like Free Realms and Clone Wars Adventures, we believe this new model will expand the DCUO experience and offer more options that cater to every type of player so they can play the game in a way that fits them.”

All three levels provide access to the current game, but allow differing tiers of convenience and flexibility. The levels are:

* Free: New players will now have access to the current gameplay in DC Universe Online (including Gotham City, Metropolis, and all current raids and alerts), with the ability to create two characters, join a league and many other benefits. Free level players will be able to purchase downloadable game packs/updates, additional character slots, powers and more through microtransactions.

* Premium: Any player who has spent at least $5 USD (including former paid subscribers and new players who have purchased $5 of in-game items) will qualify for the Premium access level. Premium level players will have more benefits available to them than the Free level player, including additional character slots, additional inventory slots, and higher cash limits. Downloadable adventure packs, additional character slots, and more can be purchased in-game.

* Legendary: Maximum features and benefits are included at this level. Loaded with enhanced additional features, Legendary access will be available for a $14.99 USD monthly fee and includes all DLC packs at no cost, more than 15 character slots, more than 80 inventory slots, the ability to form unrestricted-sized leagues, and many other benefits.

More information on the DCUO free-to-play access levels can be found here: http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/free/ .

City Of Heroes will soon be free

Not only will it be free to download but free to play! After seven years and 20 updates, the MMO will now come in a few new flavors. Here is the breakdown.

There are 3 levels of player status free, premium and VIP.

Free is the basics, Less archetypes, no super groups, no mail, limited chat options and limited auction house functionality.

Premium is any existing players that move over to free. Essentially if you have subscribed before, you get a reward for doing so. You get more chat options, more archetypes, mail use and can join super groups.

VIP is where the mythical expendable income players hang. You pay the fee monthly, you get all the goods. All types, full auction house and form super groups.

Currently it is implied that you can go from premium or free to a VIP and back to premium, unlike other super powered MMO’s that offer free play.

No specific date is yet, just later this year as a launch window for City of Heroes Freedom.
