Preview – Serious Sam: The Random Encounter

Developer: Vlambeer
Publisher: Devolver Digital
Pixel Art: Roy De Groot
Sound: Alex Maur

Serious Sam 3 is coming, to celebrate this legendary event, we’re getting 3 games to lead up to the release date. Serious Sam: The Random Encounter is the last chapter of this magical saga, bringing JRPG elements to the franchise while keeping the foundation alive. Admittedly, Vlambeer says they know nothing about J-RPG’s so it’s just a bunch of shooting everything in the face which is fine by me, the world could use a little more shooting things in the face in gaming instead of whatever it is they’re doing. I was able to sit down for an hour with the preview build and find out how entertaining old school face blasting could be again.

Jumping into the game I fell into a sense of nostalgia, most likely because my 1920×1200 screen was glowing in 8-bit pixel gaming love and amazing music. For retro fans alone, this is a game to look into as it captures the unique style of the era while mocking so many horrible faults of the genre. Sam and crew (yes crew) even go so far as to engage in deep puzzle levels taxing players to the limit, at least it taxes their weapons to the limit I should say. Mass swarms are found every time Sam and company walk into a random encounter situation, they do get harder and they do have a variety of attacks that can leave members dead or ineffective.

Like a traditional J-RPG there are menus and options, generally you find yourself picking if you want the big gun the bigger gun or the biggest gun and even with that awesome potential you have issues. Rockets are epic but if you have a group of foolish enemies crowded in front of you, they’ll eat them all and you will have no extra ammo for strays until the next choice. Sometimes, the simplest weapons like the revolver will prove the most effective in sticky situations, trying to expect those will be critical in the game to survive.

The art in the game is amazing, not only is it 8-bit themed but it takes on a 70’s badass vibe as your fellow face shooters pack Afros and burly mustaches, it has been a while since I thought something was so purely brutal and The Random Encounter gets it done with ease.

The game will release soon on October 24th via Steam with a price tag of $4.99. We’ll try to have a final verdict out when it goes live.

DC Universe soon to be free to play

DC Universe fans will soon be a available at a greatly reduced rate of free. Here is the news and breakdown on the three tiers from Sony.

Sony Online Entertainment today announced a new free-to-play business model for its popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) game DC Universe Online (DCUO) — where players have the freedom to become legendary fighting alongside DC Comics icons like Superman, Batman and The Jokerin an ever-evolving online action adventure that has already logged more than 42 million hours of super-powered gameplay action by players since its launch earlier this year.

Beginning late October, players will be able to download and access DCUO for free on both the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC. As part of this transition, SOE is introducing three new access levels to the game: Free, Premium and Legendary. All three levels will provide access to open world gameplay and missions, general game updates and fixes to the game, with each level offering different game options and benefits.

“When we launched DC Universe Online, we introduced a very different brand of massive online game driven by fast action combat to PC and PS3™gamers and with that, we discovered a new type of online gamer,” said John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment. “We’ve listened to our community, and we’ve determined that the free-to-play model is the best fit for DC Universe Online.”

Smedley added, “Our philosophy embraces learning from our experience and as a pioneer in the free-to-play space with proven successful games like Free Realms and Clone Wars Adventures, we believe this new model will expand the DCUO experience and offer more options that cater to every type of player so they can play the game in a way that fits them.”

All three levels provide access to the current game, but allow differing tiers of convenience and flexibility. The levels are:

* Free: New players will now have access to the current gameplay in DC Universe Online (including Gotham City, Metropolis, and all current raids and alerts), with the ability to create two characters, join a league and many other benefits. Free level players will be able to purchase downloadable game packs/updates, additional character slots, powers and more through microtransactions.

* Premium: Any player who has spent at least $5 USD (including former paid subscribers and new players who have purchased $5 of in-game items) will qualify for the Premium access level. Premium level players will have more benefits available to them than the Free level player, including additional character slots, additional inventory slots, and higher cash limits. Downloadable adventure packs, additional character slots, and more can be purchased in-game.

* Legendary: Maximum features and benefits are included at this level. Loaded with enhanced additional features, Legendary access will be available for a $14.99 USD monthly fee and includes all DLC packs at no cost, more than 15 character slots, more than 80 inventory slots, the ability to form unrestricted-sized leagues, and many other benefits.

Black Fire 2 Mod touches down on Crysis 2

Black Fire 2 is ready to rock on Crysis 2, packing a huge variety of engine changes and texture swaps it might be the best mod to have in your collection. Keep in mind this is a big swap and some major changes to textures have left them bare of Tessellation for now, if you can stomach that I suggest checking out the mod. If you’re still on the fence I suggest watching the youtube demo and getting your mind BLOWN AWAY.

Crytek did a good job with the DX11 patch but this really kicks the life out of that patch and leaves it for dead. Download it here (Translated) it’s a 9 stage process from what I can see.

Left 4 Dead 2 Suicide Blitz 2 Easter Egg

PC modding is always awesome, today we get a glimpse of how far that can go in Suicide Blitz 2 for Left 4 Dead 2. The mod takes you from the regular map through a series of custom challenges from Portal 2 with GLaDOS dropping motivational quotes to keep you pushing on. To top it off, the maps throw in some good pokes between both series with a number of custom sequences that are fun for all.

Check out the video on youtube of a pair that found this Easter Egg.

Bethesda announces Dishonored

Many may not know or may have forgotten about the acquisition of Arkane Studios by Zenimax last year. Today they’re here with Dishonored a FPA (First Person Action) game already in development on the 360, PS3 and PC of course.

What do we know so far? Not much, Raphael Colantonio the lead design man for Arx Fatalis and Harvey Smith from Deus Ex are on board but the rest is being held for Game Informer who seems to have a full exclusivity agreement as the Dishonored website links to GI. At this point I usually refer you to their website but I’ll just paraphrase the important parts from the cover article topic.

The GI crew got a hands on with the game, the design itself leads to freedom of choice, a game about an assassin that doesn’t have to do it. About having the ability to use stealth and infiltration techniques using the most brutal methods just because you can. Placing full control on the choice of the user instead of forcing the hand of the player. In a sense it’s what many FPS games like the original Deus Ex tried to create for players. A sense of control or choice with every single action.

[Updated] Stack up bodies in Left 4 Dead 2’s Cold Stream for DLC!

Killing zombies is a tough task, Cold Stream in Left 4 Dead 2 actually makes that to new levels. Valve is trying to sweeten the deal as the add-on is slated for release, if they can get 20,000 people to survive the onslaught they’ll release Dead Air for L4D2 early on July 10th. Players can beat the campaign on any difficulty to earn the new achievement and help everyone enjoy the goods a little earlier.

Check out the official blog post for more information or jump on Steam and lend a hand. I’ll be in the fight in just a bit as well.

[Left 4 Dead Blog]

Update – Playthrough tips:

  • When you can grab a second pistol do so, you’ll have 30 rounds to unleash when your primary weapon goes out of ammo
  • Melee strike as much as possible when reloading, try to maintain the high ground and if you’re playing in SP, grab high range weapons like the sniper rifle to pick enemies off before leading the AI in.
  • The waves rely on users moving forward after the first attack, doing so leaves you open to being surrounded, fight the first flood and then wait for the second before going forward. If your team is tightly held you can last through these waves.
  • Solo players will die, you can’t rush in these maps, trying is pretty much suicide and leaves the team with one less person
  • On the bridge, beware of some glitches in crossing the beams, if someone falls there is a chance they’ll get stuck on the side railing until they die, trying to save them is pointless as they’ll instantly go into falling mode again.
  • In the final map have at least one person get the grenade launcher, save the rounds as much as possible, in the final zone unload the rounds to reduce the swarms to 0.
  • Heal your team often but always try to keep 1-2 med packs in reserve, in some cases the game will ask for a sacrifice, if you survive they’ll have a med pack waiting unless someone hijacks it and leaves you for dead. (Bridge scene has a charger that blows you off the scaffolding if you don’t have grenade rounds).

Xbox 360 users:The L4D team has confirmed that the 360 version of Cold Stream will arrive later this summer.

Completed using: Dual Handguns, Grenade Launcher, M249 SAW, Sniper Rifle (primary)

Hopefully these lend a hand in getting through Cold Stream and get you a new badge. Completed it in 49mins solo on hard, well designed but the boundary boxes need work still and the AI enemies and team often get stuck or make really odd mistakes through the entire campaign.

Tweak your PC copy of GTA IV – iCEnhancer 1.2.5 coming soon

Gaming often falls into a pit where you get what you get and that’s it. On the PC side you get lucky when a dev doesn’t lock up their game from further tweaking. GTA IV is one of those fortunate titles and today we have a glimpse of iCEnhancer 1.2.5 coming to the game soon.

What does this do? It makes GTA IV look close to photo realistic and absolutely stunning. I feel lame for buying it on the 360 back in the day because now I need to buy and beat the entire thing over again on the PC but at least it’ll look great in the process. If you’re not sure what the fuss is about, look at the clip below. I advise watching in at least 480p though because there’s a lot to see in this upgrade.
