Review – I Shall Remain I PC

Story:

Set in an alternate timeline, the Nazis release a deadly virus on US territory. As one of the survivors, you must fight off Zombies and gather allies as you travel. I found the story to be alittle uninteresting for the most part, but then again it’s a post-apocalypse ARPG so you shouldn’t expect much when comes to story telling

Gameplay/Controls:

As an ARPG game, I Shall Remain combines role-playing and strategic aspects to it which makes it unique, the game features a real-time progression system similar to a standard RPG game, you can upgrade/ enhance your weapons and add tons of abilities to your character as you play along. Being a top down shooter with no gamepad support, the controls are standard PC, W,S,A,D with the mouse controlling your characters view of vison, the controls are similar to games like Gauntlet and Diablo. For most part the game plays smoothly, there are a few bugs, like when zombie you trigger a zombie event which causes a herd of zombies to charge at you, I had hit box issues a few times.  The difficult settings are easy, normal, hard, and impossible, if you want a real challenge play with impossible settings with hardcore mode on, hardcore mode makes the game more challenging for the simple fact that if the player dies then the game is over and you must start over, I gave this a shot but after dying a few times I gave it up. Because it has realtime rpg like elements boss battles are more in your face, for example you can be walking a find a herd of zombies which triggers a boss battle, that’s one the things I found different and fun about this game.

Visuals / Presentation:

I shall remain has good visuals, must notably the lighting, they truly do a good job making the dark enough to give you a since of the unknown despite it being a Top-Down shooter, usually games like this the field of view is so wide open it makes the game extremely easy, but Scorpius Games    do a great job making dark enough for players to keep their attention strictly on what’s in front of them and what the character can see through his or hers flashlights radius. The graphics are solid as well textures look nice and detail, the music also contributes to the games eerie and creep environments

Features:

The game features 3 modes, Prologue, Story Mode and Survive. The prologue mode is like a demo/ tutorial which helps the player get familiar with the game, Story mode is basically the core game, players play through the main story, and finally Survive mode which is exactly what it sounds like, you must try and survive as waves of zombies attack, each wave the infected get stronger and a bit more challenging.

Conclusion:

I Shall Remain is a entertaining ARPG game with good visuals, modes and an in-depth leveling system makes the replay ability of this game high which is always a plus. So if you’re looking for a game with good reply value with a low price tag then I Shall Remain is the game you need.

A new Game of Thrones RPG trailer arrives – This is War

Atlus has been hard at work getting the word out about all the new shifts coming to the new Game of Thrones RPG, today we get another peek as the May release date approaches, while it wont be in time for the season return of the show it’ll still be an interesting expansion on the universe. We’re holding out on calling anything on this one as it could go either way, hopefully Atlus can turn out a winner and make RPG and Game of Thrones fans happy though.

Check out the video below to see This is War, it’s pretty epic and the visuals are polishing up well.

Review – The Guild: Zaboo

This issue is Zaboo centric, hence the fact that it’s called “Zaboo.”  We start with a flashback of Zaboo as a kid, still game obsessed, girl crazy and just a little “different.”  We learn that his relationship with his Mom has always been over the top and even though she’s a bit crazy there is nothing that she won’t do for her son.  We see this first hand, self-inflicted wet willy anyone?  Flash forward, even though he’s not a kid anymore not much has changed except that he now has friends, The Guild.  He’s into Codex and he believes she’s into him due to some misplaced emoticons.  To go help and finally meet (in real life) his true love, Zaboo stages an elaborate escape from his mother’s house.  After an awesome Saved By The Bell reference, Zaboo’s Mom finally catches up to him at the bus station and the battle royale takes place.  He finally gets to meet Codex, but will his Mom give up that easy?

I love these Guild comics so much.  They are ridiculously funny and so entertaining.  This issue features “mini-games” and a Choose Your Own Adventure style throughout the comic which makes it really unique and fun.  Even though this issue is Zaboo based, all the characters are present and captured perfectly both in tone and for the most part in looks.  The only complaint I have about this series is that it doesn’t come out more often!  Felicia Day has really created something endearing both in the comic and the series.  Definitely pick up this issue (unless you don’t like good things) and while you’re there pick up the past issues as well.  Comic’d!

Desura jumps into digital distribution and Linux support

Today you can get a game from a variety of services, basically your own investigation is your only limit. What’s a bit of  a pain is finding such a company in the Linux arena though, today that issue ends as Desura jumps into the fold with dedicated Windows and Linux community support.

[Desura]

The twist here comes from the basis of the store, this isn’t another shop focused on bringing you another way to buy Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3, instead it caters to a mod and indie community often overlooked or pressured out of the game due to high costs from the mainstream store fronts. It’s a cool alternative and the prices seem fair. The Desura site notes that developers take control of how they present and expose their games, the community also drives feedback by raising awareness of stand-out mods and games that should really get a spin. It’s a unique ecosystem where the team tries to play a completely external role to the main growth of the site.

With IndieDB and ModDB support pushing the team and some Windows support in there it seems like this might be a rare gem for indie and Linux gamers hoping to make their lives a bit less stressful when it comes to supporting and exploring the community. You can download it now for both platforms and get rolling.

This months must have game for the PS3 is… a playstation game?

If you have never played Xenogears when it was on the playstation, you are missing one of the greatest RPGs to ever be released.

The game was tough to find if you weren’t an early adopter. It wasn’t at all uncommon to see ebay listings over 100 dollars. The release as a greatest hits made it much easier to get a hold of.

Now it is available on PSN!! The 10 dollar ticket price is well worth it considering the cheapest it is currently on amazon for is $44 plus shipping.

EA / Bioware announce Dragon Age 2 for PS3/360/PC

Today RPG fans can go wild, Bioware brings official confirmation that Dragon Age 2 will be coming in March of 2011 to the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The latest story will take players into the role of Hawke a Blight survivor and hero set to transform the world.

Details are vague on the changes to the game for the sequel, noting only that the game will deliver the same epic story and a new bar for action. The key of course is that they still wish to keep original fans happy and familiar with the sequel instead of jumping beyond the target. New combat systems, improved graphics and storytelling are just some of the foundations to be focused on.

From EA/Bioware:

Dragon Age 2 thrusts players into the role of Hawke, a penniless refugee who rises to power to become the single most important character in the world of Dragon Age. Known to be a survivor of the Blight and the Champion of Kirkwall, the legend around Hawke’s rise to power is shrouded in myth and rumor. Featuring an all-new story spanning 10 years, players will help tell that tale by making tough moral choices, gathering the deadliest of allies, amassing fame and fortune, and sealing their place in history. The way you play will write the story of how the world is changed forever.

For more information, keep an eye on the Dragon Age website / twitter / facebook pages.

NIER shows off cultivation potential

There are many things out there to attract RPG fans, brutality, hunting, crazy magic spells, epic summoning ability. Those just attack the tip of the iceberg, NIER is almost an entirely different beast it seems. Today the team releases a cultivation Tips n’ Tricks video to the masses to show off how absolutely intense you can be just about farming.

[stream flv=x:/www.bamfas.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Nier_Farming_NA_Combo-H.264.flv hd=x:/www.bamfas.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Nier_Farming_NA_Combo-H.264.flv embed=false share=false width=540 height=304 dock=true controlbar=over bandwidth=med autostart=false /]

As you can see from the video, NIER is hardcore about the little things, I had bad farming flashbacks just watching that sequence play out. For those wondering the PR team actually disclosed what the formula looks like to get the Lunar Tear.

(R + G + B = Ph)

(G + B = I)

o (R + I = Pk)

(Ph + Pk = (hopefully) W) x? = LT
