The Night of the Owls is almost here, Scott Snyder talks

Gotham is about to become a battlefield for Batman and his friends against the Court of Owls and their dark allies. The Night of Owl’s crossover launches into action for DC this week.

The Talons are eager to act upon the will of the Court and the fate of the city is in the balance, a lost group who once reigned over the city is striving to take it back into their dark hands with this round of killers who will stop at nothing to meet the will of their masters. Who will rule the city after it’s all said and done? We have to read on in this new saga to find out.

Scott Snyder was available for DC to grab for comment on this new crossover for the Batman world.

“Night of the Owls is here, and it’s about time.”

I think that’s what a lot us on team Batman have been feeling these last few days. Because for us, this is the moment – the moment we’ve been excitedly working on and building towards for months. This is it, and now it’s really here! This is the night when the Court of Owls makes its move, sending close to 60 Talons out into the skies of Gotham, each with a deadly mission designed to help bring the city to its knees. Of course, the missions will also bring the Talons crashing into conflict with almost every member of the Bat-family, and even though this whole story takes place on one single night, for many of Gotham’s heroes, these clashes will have terrifying consequences that linger long after Gotham’s fate is decided.

“Night of the Owls is here, and it’s about time.”

There’s another reason that phrase sticks with me, though. And that’s because the story itself is about time, about history. For one thing, with every Talon having come from a different era of Gotham’s past, they’ll be plenty of glimpses literally and figuratively into Gotham’s history, with a lot of shocking secrets from the past being revealed. Basically, the story is about Gotham’s dark past being brought to to bear against the heroes of the present – about the evil from decades, even centuries of corruption emerging from the shadows to crush the spirit of the city – and the Bat-family – once and for all, in one single night, now.

So here’s hoping you’ll feel the same way we do…

“Night of the Owls is here, and it’s about time.”

Let the war for Gotham’s soul begin.

For those wondering, the series kicks off in Batman #8 and Nightwing #8 this week, the story will spiral from there into the rest of the Batman releases as the story goes full-blown in May. It’s an epic event so don’t get caught playing catch up on this series.

Matt Kindt Variant Cover

A burned out comedian, Guy Krause, is attending court ordered D.U.I. classes because of his recent arrest for road rage. In the class he meets Angie, a woman who asks Guy if he would be interested in her “research project.” She explains that the project is a virtual reality game that allows the person playing it to relive their life and make changes to their past. Guy is sold on the idea mainly because his career has seen better days, he’s broke and he has been told that his help could prove lucrative to him monetarily. As quickly as he begins the game he stops it because the first event they start with is a very traumatic one that has clearly shaped who Guy has become as an adult. He quits. Soon after quitting he assesses his debt, career and life and realizes he doesn’t have too many other choices and must continue on with the game. Will Guy be able to follow through with the project or will he just be too hard to work with?

This comic has a very interesting concept, however none of the characters thus far are likable. The burned out comedian is captured perfectly, no longer funny, just bitter and unpleasant. After his first experience with the game I could see Guy mellowing some and becoming a more relatable character. He has built his entire life around experiences he perceived a certain way and after playing the game for just a few minutes it appears things happened for reasons different from what he originally thought. The dialog and art are good, as is the story, but it just feels like it’s missing something. It could be that this is just the first issue and it’s just laying the groundwork for the rest of the story.

Dancy Flammarion, a young albino girl, is being directed by an invisible angel and appears to be on a mission to rid the world of various monsters. This issue introduces us to Dancy, our heroine as she waits at a bus stop in what appears to be a dilapidated, abandoned town. As she waits, a bird with a serious attitude appears and they strike up a tenuous conversation. This conversation is our first indication that the world is a little different from what we are used to. We also learn, as a woman appears, that Dancy has quite the reputation, she’s a badass that’s being guided by a higher power! This issue focuses on Dancy and the stranger who we quickly learn wants to kill her. They participate in a battle of wits which finally ends in a battle royale. Will Dancy live to fight another day and if she does will there be consequences for her actions?

This is an amazing story. Dancy has the perfect mix of youth, smarts and the will to survive. I was intrigued from start to finish. There is enough mystery to keep you glued to the page and enough explanation that you don’t feel lost. I loved and was blown away by the art. The cover is amazing. The muted tones really do an excellent job conveying the mood of the story and the strangers slow transformation is fabulous. The dialog is phenomenal and the character development is spot on giving you just enough to want more. The story itself moves at a great pace and builds tension
as it progresses. This is a fantastic read, it’s highly recommended and I can’t wait for the next issue!

Zenescope Entertainment announces Kickstarter campaign for Grimm Animated Series

Kickstarter is taking over to jump-start new developments, instead of games we’re seeing it used in a new project by Zenescope Entertainment for their new Grimm Animated Series project. The big show kicks off today and runs through May 1 for people to jump on board. The project is being directed by Jon Schnepp of Metalocalypse, Venture Bros. and Nerd Hunter 3004 fame with  Titmouse Inc. for the animation side of things (Metalocalypse, Black Panther, Freaknik: The Musical). They’re not after a small goal though, the team notes it’ll take $175,000 to get this project off the ground to get the pilot episode running and establish the foundation to continue the series after that.

Zenescope had a lot to mention on the project and this experiment into crowd funded pursuits for entertainment in other media.

“We believe that our Grimm Fairy Tales comic book series would make an excellent animated series, and we’ve been pitching the idea to theHollywood big-wigs for years. They’ve said “There is too much Fairy Tales stuff out there”, or “No one wants to see a gritty, dark, modern take on the fairy tales.” That’s where they’re wrong. We have tons of devoted fans that would love to see more of our series, and that is our chance and yours to make it happen.”

Grimm Fairy Tales has been the flagship series of Zenescope Entertainment since the company started. Zenescope has grown to a top comic book publisher due to its continued success. Grimm Fairy Tales is currently the longest running independent color comic being published today and has over 1 million copies in print.

Jon Schnepp will be directing this project. He is one of the hottest animation directors in Hollywood, having already seen a great deal of success working on such series as Aqua Teen Hunger Force , Metalocalypse, and the Venture Brothers. Not only will Jon be working closely with the creators of the comic book, Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco; Zenescope will be enlisting Titmouse Inc, one of the premiere animation studios, to help with this vision.

Titmouse Inc is a premiere animation studio with top-tier talent and experience. Jon Schnepp has worked with them before on many of his projects, and much of their work rounds out the Adult Swim animation block on Cartoon Network. Their variety of experience is suited well for the Grimm Fairy Tales animation series anthology.

If you want to help support the development of the project check out their Kickstarter page and see if it sparks your interest.
